Elton Mangoma President of the Renewal Democrats of Zimbabwe (RDZ)  is said to have received death threats, through his mobile phone, last Thursday from unknown people.
According to the party’s information department, the former energy minister received the threat via his mobile on Thursday afternoon, at around 3:46pm.
The message, sent from a local mobile number 0718 547 844 read, “Ukauya Headlands tiri kukuuraya (We shall kill you if you set foot in Headlands)”
Mangoma, who is former MDC MP for Headlands, does not know who sent him the message.
He made a report on Monday at Malborough Police Station under case number RRB2742186.
One of the police officers who received the report is said to have tried to call the sender but there was no response from the number.
However, the former MDC-T treasurer general said the death threats will not stop him for fighting for the “democratisation” of the country.
“This is an act of cowardice and threats like that will not stop us to work for the betterment of this country and to get rid of Robert Mugabe and Zanu-PF which has subjected the Zimbabwean people to poverty,” Mangoma was quoted as saying.
“We would want the law to take its course and investigate on the sender’s motive. If the police fail to come up with the culprit then we would know that it’s part and parcel of the State machinery that uses violence and intimidation to deprive the citizens from their right to opinion.”
Several of Mangoma’s supporters in March this year had their homes torched by suspected Zanu PF supporters in Headlands.
The incident was allegedly done to punish them for supporting the small opposition party.
Mangoma is not the first to receive death threats through his mobile as some MDC-T MPs last year also received death threats through the same way for heckling President Robert Mugabe during the opening of parliament.
