Terrence Mawawa, Chiredzi| Four passengers died on the spot Monday morning when the commuter omnibus they were travelling in veered off the road 20 km from Chiredzi town.
According to ZimEye witnesses and details from Chiredzi police, the driver of the commuter omnibus was speeding.The omnibus was travelling from Checheche to Chiredzi.
It is understood the driver saw an oncoming vehicle while attempting to overtake another commuter omnibus and in an attempt to avoid a head on collision, he lost control of the omnibus. The vehicle veered off the road and overturned -killing four people on the spot while several others were seriously injured.
“The driver was competing for passengers with a Svorex commuter omnibus. As he attempted to overtake the Svorex omnibus, he saw an oncoming vehicle. In a bid to avoid a head on collision, he lost control of the omnibus,” said an eyewitness who spoke to ZimEye.com
Chiredzi police confirmed the accident. “We can confirm that there was a fatal accident here this morning but you can find out more information from Inspector Charity Mazula(Masvingo Provincial police spokesperson)-she is the right person to furnish you with more details,” said an officer at Chiredzi Police Station.
Inspector Mazula was said to be out of office and she was not readily available for a comment.
