Zimbabwean police have instructed Pastor Evan Mawarire’s lawyer, to bring his client to Harare police station next Tuesday, amidst fears they have cooked up fresh charges against the now exiled #ThisFlag campaigner.
This is against a background of President Robert Mugabe not mincing his words about the persecution about to befall those who were challenging his regime.
Mugabe warned churches in apparent reference to the preacher to refrain from meddling in politics and causing disharmony among the people, saying the country has means to protect its hard won independence.
“They said they wanted him for an interview, but it looks like they want to charge him with subverting a constitutionally-elected government,” said Harrison Nkomo.
Nkomo successfully argued for Mawarire’s release from police custody earlier this month.
Mawarire, who started the This Flag protest movement, is in South Africa at the moment. He has indicated that he does not feel safe returning home.
Threats that President Robert Mugabe made during a speech to war veterans in Harare this week would not have made the 39-year-old father of two feel any safer. Mugabe said he and his party knew “how to deal with our enemies”.
Already the Zimbabwe National Liberation War Veterans Association spokesperson Douglas Mahiya appeared in court facing charges of undermining the authority of the President.
The authorities maintain that Mawarire was inciting violence, a claim he has denied. News24
