The church has urged the civil society to partner with the opposition political parties which are boycotting elections and ‘push harder’ for reforms.
The Morgan Tsvangirai led MDC and its splinter the MDC renewal have said that they would never participate in any future  election if the ZANU (PF)  government  does not implement the new constitution.
The two opposition parties boycotted the weekend by-elections which were held in Mount Darwin West and Chirumanzu –Zibagwe constituencies.
Reacting to the two by-elections, Catholic Commission for Justice and Peace in Zimbabwe chairperson Bishop Alexio Muchabaiwa said the opposition was justified in boycotting elections.
“We understand their concerns and we encourage them to partner with similar like minded institutions to push harder for the necessary reforms and alignment of the past laws to the constitution”.
Some o f the reforms demanded by the opposition include the timely provision of the voters’ roll by the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission ZEC.
The constitution also says all contesting political parties should be given equal media coverage by the public broadcaster.
Bishops said two by-elections were a non-event and urged citizens not to go and vote in future elections if there are no reforms.
“Otherwise the forth coming 15 by-elections and the 2018 harmonized elections would just be a constitutional formality”.

  1. “MDC-T can push for early free & fair elections”….even before the recalling of the MPs, their presence in parliament is really of no consequence at all!!

  5. We welcome the Bishops’ position on this matter. We would welcome the CCJP’s position even more if the Bishops paid a bit more attention to MDC’s wishy-washy demands. Zimbabwe has already had her chance to bring about meaningful democratic reforms during the GNU and wasted it because MDC did not have a clue what the reforms were about. We believe the MDC still does not have a clue and hence the reason we are in this position today calling for reforms.
The reforms we should be calling for are the democratic reforms agreed in the GPA and not these wishy-washy reforms to align the laws with a weak and feeble new constitution.
We are going to have a second bit at the cherry we must make sure we get it right this time!

  7. Other parties have already made the resolution and they will not change. The electorate will not and should not respect people who keep on changing. There is fear that some individuals or Tswangirai may yield to “the pressure”The entire opposition should boycott the elections. It works. Some individuals like Methuseli Moyo argue that if the MDC Renewal participates then that will be an opportunity to prove their strength. There is nothing to prove in an already rigged election that you will obviously loose.
The MDC-T can even go a step farther. It can struggle to have early free and fair elections. After all their presence in Parliament serves nothing truly

  9. Never be tempted to reverse the congress resolution NEVER to participate in elections without reforms. This support from men of cloth is coming in handy and timely to strengthen all those who are beginning to think that the loww hanging fruit should not be allowed to go begging!!! Remain resolute and we will eventually get the desired reforms.
