Staff Reporter | The normally perceived as quiet Gwanda town is gearing to make their voices heard when residents take to the streets on Friday to demonstrate in demand for electoral reforms.
The demonstration under the auspices of the National Electoral Reform Agenda NERA is being organised combined by all political parties and civic society organisations in the town.
Sources within the organisers of the demonstration told ZimEye.com that provincial leaders from MDCT, MDC N, Zimbabwe People First and the People’s Democratic Party and some prominent civil society leaders have been attending meetings to prepare and mobilise for the demonstration.
According to sources, police in Gwanda were served with the notice for the intention to demonstrate early in the week and at the time of going to press no correspondence had been received from the police opposing the notice.
The organisers claim that invitations have been sent to the business community in the town and transport operators to join the demonstration which will shut down operations in the town.
Opposition political parties have come together to demand reforms to the electoral act ahead of the 2018 elections.
Demonstrations by the opposition parties to present petitions to the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission with the demands have been squashed by police in Harare resulting in the demonstrations turning violent.
