By Tinoonga Mawere, Masvingo|Former MDC political strategists and (Tendai Biti)PDP heavyweights Jeffryson Chitando and Earnest Mudavanhu have joined Joyce Mujuru’s People First.
Mujuru has also lured several former Zanu PF bigwigs including Claudius Makova, Kudakwashe Bhasikiti and Servious Mbudzi as the former Vice President seeks to tackle her former boss in the keenly anticipated 2018 polls.
Mujuru has now emerged as the main contender to take on President Robert Mugabe in the crucial polls and she recently met the Masvingo provincial executive in Harare for a mapping of the way forward.
This comes despite some cynical political observers who still maintain Mujuru is a product of Mugabe ‘s political whims and could be used to eclipse the opposition ahead of the 2018 plebiscite.
Chitando confirmed the development and said there was need to focus on toppling Mugabe and his wife Grace from power.
“We are now People First and the major focus is for us to topple Mugabe and his wife Grace from power .That is our objective and there is need for us to join hands and focus on one common objective,” said Chitando.
It is understood the entire PDP provincial executive has deserted Tendai Biti to join People First.
Millions of Zimbabweans now pin their hopes on Mujuru who is seen as a strong candidate to depose Mugabe. This also follows MDC leader Morgan Tsvangirai ‘s said “tired potiltical approach” as the donor community continues to desert the former premier.
Political observers say the formation of a grand coalition is Tsvangirai’s last trump card in saving his dwindling political career.
