France says Zimbabwe is not going to benefit from the Green Climate Funding (GCF) which the United Nations set for Africa until it clears its ballooning international debt.
GCF is a global climate fund which was established to assist developing countries to develop and manage climate change programmes.
The fund which was set up in 2011 and is being spearheaded by France intends to mobilize $100 billion by 2020.
Zimbabwe is among of African countries which are bearing the effects of climate change but its $10 billion debt it owes to the multilateral institutions according to France is going to make it difficult for the country to get climate change grants.
French Ambassador to Zimbabwe Laurent Delahousse told  a post COP-21 meeting which was organised by the Church in this week that although Zimbabwe has viable climate change adaptation and mutigation projects they are going to remain unfunded until the country clears its global debt.
“For the moment Zimbabwe cannot benefit from loans, from international financial institutions or those countries member of the club of the Paris such as France to which it is in arrears and once these arrears have been cleared then they will be financing from the World bank, from the French development agency   to government or municipal projects in Zimbabwe,” said ambassador Delahousse.
“But for the moment it is not possible because of the debts. I am glad that the participation of Zimbabwe in the just ended COP-21 in Paris is a step towards to the normalisation of relations”.
The Brettonwoods institutions black listed Zimbabwe in 2002 after President Robert Mugabe had embarked on the controversial land redistribution.
Zimbabwe Council of Churches acting general secretary Gabriel Manyangadze one of the organisers of the Post COP -21 meeting said politics should not affect climate change funding.
“Our take is that when we come to climate change politics should not be taken to the forefront because the one who suffers is the ordinary person,” he said.
“So we take great exception to this kind of an approach where politics supersedes the livelihood of the general populace on the ground and on that note as the church we will be approaching different offices and groupings that are supposed to be assisting to have unconditional   support of the ordinary people”.

  5. Even if the money came it was going to be used for something different like civil servants’ salaries or Nikuv. The Chinese are also tired of giving money to Zimbabwe.

  6. Why not approach the politicians and make them do the right things, this is clear our politics is not right and that should be corrected to alleviate the suffering of the ordinary people.
