KIGALI – Rwanda’s President Paul Kagame has launched a scathing verbal attack on the UK government after the arrest of his intelligence chief.
In his first comments since the arrest, Mr Kagame said it was a continuation of “colonialism” and accused the British of “arrogance and contempt”.
Karenzi Karake was detained at London’s Heathrow Airport on Saturday, in response to a European Arrest Warrant.
He is accused of ordering massacres in the wake of the 1994 Rwanda genocide.
The president said that the British authorities “must have mistaken [Gen Karake] for an illegal immigrant. The way they treat illegal immigrants is the way they treat all of us”.
He added that the British had been patronising, “wagging a finger at the African and telling him this is where you belong. We are no longer the African that belongs there”.
Gen Karake has appeared in a London court.
In Rwanda, protests have continued outside the British High Commission in the capital, Kigali.
Protesters have threatened to remain until the Gen Karake is released.

  1. The trouble with Africa is we always seem to get rid of one tyrant only to replace him with another tyrant.President Kagame has done great things ever he came into office and yet no one can pretend any more than he has become a dictator is his own right! He has now over stayed his welcome.
The democratic qualities of former SA President Nelson Mandela, the willingness
to rule but with the democratic wish of the people, are still a very rare
    attribute in Africa.

The greatest threat to peace and prosperity to the people of Rwanda and Africa in general is not from the patronizing West but from the black leaders who have taken over from the white colonialists and lord over the people with the same brutality if not worse. These black leaders are now using the imagined threat from the West as an excuse for denying the populous the basic human rights, freedoms and all human dignity and hope!
The greatest insult to blacks of the white supremacists during the slave trade, two centuries ago, was that blacks are incapable of self-rule. During the white colonial oppression the white supremacists’ taunt has remained the same. For the last fifty years we, blacks, have had the chance to prove the white supremacists wrong by demonstration we are capable of self-rule.
President Kagame, it is your failure to establish a just and democratic Rwanda after all these years in power that is wagging the accusing finger of failure at you and not the British! You are just another African leader who has proven beyond doubt that you are incapable of self-rule!
