South Africa’s head of the Police special investigating unit who presided over the illegal deportations of countless Zimbabweansin 2010, Anwa Dramat, has been suspended.
South Africa’s Police Minister Nkosinathi Nhleko told the Bloomberg publication, Dramat has been laid aside while government probes allegations of his involvement in the illegal rendition of Zimbabwean nationals.
Dramat was suspended for 60 days yesterday from Dec. 23, Musa Zondi, spokesman for the police, told the publication via phone today from Pietermaritzburg in the eastern KwaZulu Natal province.
“He has been placed on precautionary suspension pending the investigation and finalization of claims regarding the alleged rendition of Zimbabwean nationals from South Africa without there being the right processes and protocols followed,” Zondi reportedly said.
Dramat is accused of alleged involvement in apprehending and deporting Zimbabweans back to their home country in 2010, according to the police. The suspension follows a probe conducted by the Independent Police Investigative Directorate earlier this year, Zondi said. – Bloomberg
