A 58 year-old teacher burst into tears as she begged the mother of a victim she allegedly assaulted with an electric cable to withdraw charges before the case could be heard in court.
The prison guards had hard work trying to calm the teacher down as they took her to the holding cells in preparation for the case on Thursday. Olivia Ndlovu, a teacher at Hillside Primary school in Bulawayo, begged in vain as the pupil’s mother seemed untouched by her tears.
Reports are that Ndlovu allegedly beat the Grade Seven pupil for being “dull.” She pleaded guilty to two counts of assault before magistrate Tinashe Tashaya. Ndlovu, who has been a teacher for 37 years, told the court that it was not  intentional to cause bodily harm to the pupil.
“I admit that I assaulted the pupil, but I used a rubber stick not an electrical cable to assault him. It wasn’t my intention to cause him bodily harm. I was trying to intimidate him. I want him to take his school work seriously and become a better person in future,” she said.
Ndlovu was remanded out of custody to Monday for sentencing. Prosecuting, Nathaniel Mutsikwa told the court that on unknown date to the prosecutor but between January and February at Hillside Primary School, the accused gave the pupil a Mathematics exercise to do.
“The complainant failed and the accused person assaulted the pupil with an electrical cable calling him a dull person. On February 6, 2016 the complainant got ill and he did not go to school. On the day he felt better he went to school and the accused allegedly assaulted him again using an electrical cable which resulted in him sustaining injuries,” said the prosecutor.
He added that the accused assaulted the complainant on his left arm and he sustained internal injuries. The pupil had bruises on his arm and back.
The pupil’s mother reported the matter to the police leading to Ndlovu’s arrest.

  1. The mother of the child is just being an idiot. I’ve been a student before and have also been a teacher for only 5 years. I’ve seen the cane working perfectly.
The teacher might have used it too excessively but this stupid mother should know that teachers also get excited and take pride in seeing improvement. This was for her child to be well.
Even the Bible says “spare the rode and spoil the child”.
These rights and misconstrued love being given to children is making them stupid.

  2. The educational theories that you learnt 37 years ago are largely out of date because new research is uncovering some of the flaws in those ancient bodies of knowledge. The problem with Zim academic model is that it still rely on those archaic models because the system doesnt value new research findings that poses threats to the status quo. Nowadays the child is the most important thing at a school. Isu makarekare we were made to think that the teacher ndiye aneyese. Negatve behaviour was punished. At university we knew that the student who used the very old hard to find text books gets distinctions. Chidzidzo ndechekuti mwana haarobwi. Kazhinji hudofo may be a result of other external forces beyond the child’s control. Zvino chero ukarova nomubhadha the result doesnt change. Teachers bring yourselves down to the kids level and try to see others personal aspects affecting the kid. Do not label mwana dofo because you work as a team so take blame as well.

  4. 37 years in the field. I think she was to some extend right although these days parents are more concerned about their kids not being harassed at school. Isu tairohwa isu but we are doing well and all is forgotten, tikatosangana na ticha totomutengra doro kana achimwa. I am still looking for my Grade 7 teacher to buy him at least a suit.

In our days, when you report to parents that you have been bitten by the teacher, the parents would beat you further. Call it abuse, but that’s perhaps why we have this good brand of Serious, educated, hardened and hard-working Zimbabweans through out the world.
