A Gutu based ZRP officer is in trouble after demanding $ 160 – to release an offender, ZimEye.com can reveal.
In yet another incident that has exposed corruption in the ZRP, Constable Leonard Mabheka of Gutu Police Station, demanded the money from Edward Changonda of Mupandawana Village in order to facilitate the release of the latter’s wife, Fungai Zikumba.
Mabheka promised to release Zikumba after the payment of the cash. He also told Changonda he would use his influence to avoid a court trial.
The case came to light when Gutu Magistrate Edwin Marecha remanded Zikumba in custody. Zikumba was arrested after assaulting her husband’s former girlfriend, Mellisa Matuke.
Chagonda said he paid the money so that his wife would be released.
“When my wife sent me a message saying the magistrate had remanded her in custody. I then contacted Mabheka asking him to give me back my money but he refused. I gave him the money at Chivaraidze bar in Gutu town. The officer deceived me,” said Chagonda.
Mabheka said the claims were baseless.
“It’s not true, I never demanded a bribe from that man. I did not take his money,” said Mabheka.
When contacted for a comment, Masvingo Provincial Police spokesperson, Inspector Charity Mazula said she had no details of the matter. She said she would check with the police in Gutu.
