Harare councilors today moved a motion to rename one road in the central business district , Harare after the late MDC T founding father and President, Morgan Richard Tsvangirai.

The councillors, the majority of whom are from the opposition, Movement for Democratic Change said this motion was above board considering the important role played by the late Tsvangirai in the country’s politics.

Tsvangirai, 65, succumbed to colon cancer on February 14 2018 and was buried at his rural home in Humanikwa Village, Buhera.

The late opposition leader was offered a state assisted funeral despite calls for him to be buried at the national shrine.

He was however denied hero status and was not buried at the National Heroes Acre, a development which has over the years sparked outrage as heroes’ status is determined by Zanu Pf’ s highest decision making body, the politburo.

The motion to rename one road in Harare was moved by MDC-T councilor, Peter Moyo who represents Rugare.

Councilor Moyo proposed the motion suggesting that the country should not ignore the late MDC-T leader’s contribution to the development and democracy of Zimbabwe.

Last year, opposition parties reacted angrily to the renaming of Harare International Airport after President Robert Gabriel Mugabe in a process which gobbled over $500 000.

Obert Gutu, the party’s spokesperson is on record saying the party abhors and condemns “the personalisation and privatisation of national institutions.”
