By Own Correspondent- Zimbabwe’s First Lady, Auxillia Mnangagwa has called on governments and women in leadership positions to take all the existing opportunities to address gender disparity.
Mnangagwa said the total emancipation of women required support from those in leadership positions.
Her call comes as the UN Secretary General, Antonio Guterres reaffirmed his commitment to addressing gender imbalances, while addressing a high level meeting at the ongoing Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) conference in New York.
She said:
“Women in leadership positions should take every opportunity to address gender imbalances in all spheres of life. My participation at this women’s conference has given me an opportunity to exchange notes with other influential women across the globe and a fresh impetus to work towards women empowerment.”
UN Secretary General Guterres affirmed his commitment to the provision of equal opportunities for women, saying there are qualified women with requisite skills that can be tapped into to change the narrative and develop nations.
UN Women Executive Director, Pumzile Mlambo Nquka gave a global perspective on the exclusion of women in leadership positions.
She said about 75 percent of law makers in the world are men, an indication that gender imbalances exist in most nations.
It has been established that gender parity is not debatable and can be achieved in the male dominated societies if women support each other.
The First Lady has been working with marginalised communities in Zimbabwe with a view to uplift women from the grassroots level.
Her activities are in line with the goals of the Commission on the Status of Women.
