By Dorrothy Moyo| Africa needs to create its own European Union type, Zimbabwe MPs debated on Thursday.

MP after MP spoke in support of the need to abolish border restrictions. Even the likes of Chegutu MP Dexter Nduna who kept talking about abstract subjects like “witchcraft,” were in agreement. (SEE VIDEO).

Said Wedza MP David Musabayana, “if you’re going free trade area then those borders are no longer relevant… the other good thing about these free trade areas… we are looking at what other continents have done… if we look at EU they have transformed it into a political bloc…

“EU is the most successful free trade area in the world…. that goes to show that it is important that we go to remove these borders or these tariffs…

“So Africa uniting for Africa you removing barriers will make sure that we create a big market where we want more than 1.2 billion people… why Africa is lagging behind is because of Africa has not been able to manufacture or to industrialize…because there is no individual market… there is no critical market to be able to sustain specific Industries for production but once we United it means we will be able to manufacture at low-cost.”

However, MDC MP Tendai Biti, had a different view and he said, “EU is succeeding not just because it is a free trade area, but because it is a monetary union.”
