By Own Correspondent- A pool of sewage has developed in Chitungwiza’s Zengeza 4 suburb a few metres from council head office which is posing a potential health time bomb in the dormitory town.
Some of the sewage is flowing past Herentals College and the middle of the shopping centre posing a threat to both pupils and residents who use the shopping centre and council has done nothing about it despite being in its vicinity.
A heap of garbage is also collecting at the centre of the shopping centre.
The garbage has been accumulating over the past months and no efforts have been made to rectify the situation.
Information gathered by this publication is that there is a damaged sewer pipe in the suburb and council has ordered a man who damaged the line while digging a well to repair it in the process holding residents to ransom.
“Council cannot hold people to ransom like this. What wrong have we done?
“Inga wani we pay rates,” said a resident who identified himself Landers.
So dire is the situation that a stench engulfs the whole suburb while litter continues to mount.
Council spokesperson Lovemore Meya said he would find out why the burst sewer pipe has not been replaced while he blamed accumulation of garbage to shortage of fuel at council that they sometimes fail to send compactors to collect garbage.
“Sometime we won’t be having fuel so there will not be compactors to collect garbage and residents end up dumping garbage everywhere and we need to educate them on cleanliness.
“I will investigate why the damaged pipe has not been replaced for that long.
“The flowing and pool of sewerage is a result of perennial water shortages in the town,” he said.
He said when water gets available, pressure is created in the blocked pipes leading to leakage of sewage.
“Some of the places need new pipes or even overhaul of the sewage system,” Meya said.-HMetro
