Correspondent|Estranged wife to Vice President Constantino Chiwenga, Marry Chiwenga, has revealed that her husband sent unpopular August 1 massacres commander to deliver to her his traditional divorce token, known as Gupuro in Shona.

In her court papers as the couple goes through a messy and rather nasty divorce, Marry said that she declined to accept the token which was a US Dollar note as US Dollars are not an official currency in the country.

Marry has refused to back down in the fight and is giving as good as she is getting.

In her response to the Vice President’s divorce petition filed in December, Mary argues that the couple’s customary marriage is still subsisting because Chiwenga failed to follow the dictates of cultural protocol to enable him to terminate the marriage.

She further says that she never got the customary Gupuro because of this failure to follow protocol.

While Mary concedes that Chiwenga sent retired Lieutenant General Anselem Sanyatwe to give her US$100 as a divorce token, she argues that she refused to accept it because of a breach in protocol.

Says Mary in her court papers,

“The defendant (Marry Mubaiwa Chiwenga) further claims in reconvention that the plaintiff (Constantino Chiwenga) has failed to follow proper customary law procedures to end the customary marriage and that, instead, plaintiff sent (Anselem) Sanyatwe to give her a United States dollar bill which she declined to accept on the basis that it is unlawful in Zimbabwe to transact in United States dollars and that it was (up to) the plaintiff to give her gupuro (divorce token) after following all proper customary protocol. Consequently, the customary marriage continues to subsist.

Sanyatwe was head of the National Reaction Force that used live bullets on protestors and killed 6 civilians and injured 35 more on August 1, 2018.
