Yesterday, MDC Alliance National Executive Council members met in Harare. MDC Alliance National spokesperson advocate Fadzai Mahere released a press statement, point number 5 addressed the issue of party name:

*The party restates that it is the MDC Alliance party. It contested the 2018 election as the MDC Alliance. As the alternative, it has MPs in Parliament and councillors in local authorities. It has been victimized as MDC Alliance and will win as the MDC Alliance. It will remain MDC Alliance.*

This was a response to shocking news yesterday when MDC-T led by Thokozani Khupe said it has adopted the MDC Alliance brand with immediate effect and will use the name when nominating candidates for by-elections on 9 October 2020 and elections on the 5th December 2020.

This was revealed by the MDC-T acting chairman Morgen Komichi yesterday at the Morgan Richard Tsvangirai House to mark the 21st anniversary of the original MDC.

To many political scholars and analysts this development did not come as a surprise as George Charamba, who is the Deputy Chief Secretary to the Zanu PF President and Cabinet (Presidential Communications), on 20th July 2020 hinted that the Khupe-led party will take over the MDC Alliance name.

Charamba made the stunning revelations on during an exchange with MDC Alliance secretary for elections Jacob Mafume.

Mafume had mocked ZANU PF and its leaders for allegedly trying to create a coalition government with Khupe’s MDC-T.

Charamba retorted:

“Except you have no party while pretending to be in organized opposition!!! Khupe amhanya nechinhu!! (she is now in the driving seat). Very soon you will be interdicted from using MDC-Anything!!! Watch the space!!!”

The above statement by George Charamba which was yesterday confirmed by MDC T chairperson Mr Komichi confirms the narrative that, “MDC T is a Zanu PF proxy. MDC T takes orders and is being assisted by ZANU PF to destroy MDC Alliance party led by President Nelson Chamisa.” said, Kimberely Tariro Mamhende political analyst.

What is astonishing is that, MDC T led by Khupe has been recalling MDC Alliance councillors and member of parliament because they have joined another party “MDC Alliance.” Now the question is, “Why is MDC T now want to contest by-elections as MDC Alliance. ”

Commenting on yesternight’s studio 7 news , MDC Alliance deputy national spokesperson Mr Clifford Htywayo said, “MDC T is foolish to use our MDC Alliance name.”

This year, MDC T led by Khupe took over Morgan Tsvangirai House from MDC Alliance during the night through the assistance of Zimbabwe Republic Police and Zimbabwe Army.

In addition, political analyst Magaisa said, “MDC T led by Khupe received political finance from the Government through the assistance of ZANU PF minister Ziyambi Ziyambi.”

The perception that MDC T led by Khupe is getting favours from Zanu PF as a reward for being in POLAD is enhanced “by the fast paced recalls of MDC Alliance councillors and member of parliament by ZANU PF led Minister of local government and speaker of parliament.” said, Kingsley Sibanda.

One of the supporters of Mr Komichi as president at the forthcoming MDC T Extraordinary Congress said, “MDC T name has bad omen after it was used by Khupe during 2018, harmonised elections. Khupe garnered only 45 000 votes nationally and has two mps. This dismal performance in the past elections makes Mr Komichi and others to discard MDC T in the forth by-elections.”

Advocate Tongai Matutu of MDC Alliance led by President Nelson Chamisa said, “President Nelson Chamisa and MDC Alliance party are brands. President Nelson Chamisa got 2.6 million votes, has majority of councillors and controls all urban councils and has significant number of parliamentarians. MDC Alliance is an official opposition party in Zimbabweanpolitical space.”

As a result, MDC T strategies being assisted by Zanu PF think that, “To win in the fortcoming by-elections MDC T must use MDC Alliance name to confuse the electorate.” observed Advocate Tongai Matutu.

MDC Alliance National acting women assembly chairlady honourable Mugidho said, “Zimbabweans will vote for President Nelson Chamisa and MDC Alliance party candidates. The by-elections slated for 5th December 2020, will show that President Nelson Chamisa and MDC Alliance are popular and loved by Zimbabweans.”

Will MDC T approach the courts to give them “lifeline” to use MDC Alliance party name in the fortcoming by elections?
