MDC-T Secretary General Douglas Mwonzora has celebrated his party’s controversial victory in the Marondera mayoral elections mocking those he said sought to belittle their success.

Mwonzora was posting on Twitter following the recall of the Marondera mayor and subsequent elections in which their candidate joined forces with Zanu PF councillors to defeat the MDC Alliance candidate.

“Yesterday, we won the Mayoral election for Marondera City. We are elated at this win. Of course some people have sought to belittle our victory and explain away thier loss. We shall not be discouraged. We will be meeting with the councillors shortly to discuss the strategic plans for the City. We are for good service delivery and we have zero tolerance to violence,” said Mwonzora.

The MDC-T headed by Thokozani Khupe has been on a rampage recalling legislators and councillors aligned to MDC Alliance President Nelson Chamisa.

The recalls have destabilised local authorities due to the delays to hold by-elections due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
