South Africa’s Home Affairs Minister, Dr Aaron Motsoaledi has said people crossing the Beitbridge Border between South Africa and Zimbabwe will have to produce COVID-19 certificates.

He made the remarks after meeting his Zimbabwean counterpart, Kazembe Kazembe, at the Beitbridge border post to discuss congestion at the border. Motsoaledi said:

COVID-19 regulations still need to be followed.

For the first time in December, with a large number of people going through the borders, we are going to be demanding COVID-19 certificates.

While the measures are set to protect against the spread of the coronavirus pandemic, they may result in unplanned consequences including the rise in the number of border jumping cases.

This will be mainly because some people will be unable to acquire the required certificates in time to necessitate them to go through formal channels.

Scores of people are already entering and exiting South Africa through undesignated points due to lack of proper documentation.-eNCA
