Zimbabwe under-20 football team, the Young Warriors, have been granted the green light to travel to South Africa to feature at the COSAFA tournament, slated for December 3-13,2020.

The country’s supreme sports regulatory body, the Sports and Recreation Commission (SRC) had initially refused to grant ZIFA permission to send the Young Warriors to the tournament saying the football mother body had not followed the laid down protocol including seeking clearance 30 days before the team’s departure.

ZIFA, according to SRC board chairman Gerald Mlotshwa, appealed.

And permission has been granted.

Mlotshwa announced that the young Warriors would now take part in the COSAFA tournament after permission was granted by the Ministry of Youth, Sports and Recreation in conjuction with the Ministry of Health and Child Care.

He, however, said ZIFA will be required to strictly adhere to both the national and international protocols for the prevention and containment of COVID-19 given the increase in the number of confirmed positive cases in the country and hosting province.

“Pursuant to the appeal by ZIFA for the Zimbabwe Football National under 20 (Men) participation in the COSAFA Tournament from 3-13 December 2020 in South Africa, the SRC is happy to announce that the approval for the Under 20’s to participate in the COSAFA Tournament has been granted,” Mlotshwa said.

He added: “The approval was granted by the Ministries of Youth, Sport, Arts and Recreation in conjunction with that of Health and Childcare.”
