By A Correspondent- A Murereka man has been fined $1000 for stealing maize.

Learnmore Matangambiri, 23, of Murereka, appeared before Chinhoyi Provincial Magistrate Tapiwa Banda charged with theft.

He was found guilty as charged and was fined $1000 or 30 days in jail.

Two months were suspended on condition that he pays restitution of $1320 before June 31.

The complainant in this case is Johnson Chipfinhu, 39, of Murereka.

Prosecuting, Odrah Chitoro told the court that on May 27, at around 12am, Chipfinhu was asleep at his homestead when he woke up and heard some footsteps through his bedroom window in his yard.

He peeped through the window and saw Matangambiri.

He again heard some footsteps which prompted him to wake up out of his bedroom and caught him red handed picking up a 50kg of shelled maize from the stack.

At that moment, he called him by his name, asking him what he was doing.

This did not go down well with Matangambiri who picked up a half brick and hit Chipfinhu on his back.

However, the two wrestled as Matangambiri tried to flee from the scene.

Chipfinhu then called for help, resulting in the owner of the maize, Shumirai Ganye, and other neighbours coming to the fracas.

The matter was reported to the police leading to his arrest and subsequent appearance in court.
