By Political Reporter- Overzealous supporters of President Emmerson Mnangagwa have abruptly dropped their campaign to extend his presidency beyond 2028 following threats of military intervention.
All provinces had initially endorsed the call for Mnangagwa to continue in power past his two-term limit, aiming to block Vice President Constantino Chiwenga from assuming leadership.
However, after top military officials strongly opposed the move last week, Mnangagwa’s supporters swiftly backed down.
Zanu PF’s national political commissar, Munyaradzi Machacha, confirmed the withdrawal of the Mnangagwa 2030 campaign.
“Isn’t this what you term democracy? If we remain silent, you say there’s no democracy. And if others speak, you question it. Here, it’s the people talking, and the President is listening to their wishes—ndozviripo,” Machacha said. “The people are aware of the Constitution, but they also desire the continuation of his leadership. It’s now up to him to make the final decision. Democracy doesn’t please everyone, but that’s democracy at work.”
The call for extending Mnangagwa’s rule has sparked intense debate, with political analysts warning that it undermines the Constitution and sets a dangerous precedent.
Last week, Zanu PF insiders were reportedly advocating for constitutional changes to allow Mnangagwa to remain in office beyond the 2028 deadline.
