Recent speculation has emerged suggesting that Zimbabwe’s President Emmerson Mnangagwa plans to perform secret rituals at the historic Great Zimbabwe ruins.
According to a source within the government, Mnangagwa aims to use the rituals to strengthen his grip on power.
The source claims, “Mnangagwa’s engagement with the Great Zimbabwe monuments is intended to enhance his political authority.”
Adding to the intrigue, Mnangagwa has adopted the title “Munhumutapa,” a designation historically associated with powerful traditional leaders in Zimbabwe.
This move has been interpreted by some as an effort to align himself with the revered heritage of the ancient rulers of the region.
However, Zanu PF Youth League official Taurai Kandishaya has contested these claims, asserting that the event is primarily a celebration of Munhumutapa Day.
Kandishaya stated, “Comrades and Friends in and around Zimbabwe, you are cordially invited to the Munhumutapa Day 2024.
You will be privileged to see the magnificent GREAT ZIMBABWE walls that were built long ago, listen to youths related speech by the SADC Chairperson and President of the Republic of Zimbabwe.
Stone upon Stone Great Zimbabwe ruins were Erected. Be there, join us.”
The ceremony, according to Kandishaya, is intended to honor the cultural significance of the Great Zimbabwe ruins and promote unity among the youth.
The conflicting narratives about Mnangagwa’s intentions reflect broader debates about the role of traditional symbols and ceremonies in contemporary Zimbabwean politics.
