Senator Sengezo Tshabangu, the interim Secretary General of the Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC), has sparked controversy by defending his recent visit to Mr Emmerson Mnangagwa’s farm in Kwekwe.
Amid widespread concerns about food security and hunger in Zimbabwe, Tshabangu’s attendance at a high-profile event hosted by Mnangagwa has drawn criticism from various quarters.
In a statement defending his visit, Tshabangu emphasized the importance of separating politics from other aspects of life.
“I’ve been invited to President Mnangagwa’s farm in Kwekwe to see what he’s doing at his piece of land,” Tshabangu explained.
“As long as it’s something that helps keep Zimbabwe afloat, I’ll attend without failure. Politics must be separated from social life and economics. I’ll have one or two takeaways.”
The event, which included several top government officials, was seen as an opportunity for Mnangagwa to showcase his agricultural ventures.
However, Tshabangu’s attendance comes at a time when Zimbabwe is grappling with severe food shortages and economic challenges. Critics argue that such high-profile engagements might be perceived as insensitive given the prevailing hardships faced by many Zimbabweans.
Despite the backlash, Tshabangu remains firm in his stance that political affiliations should not hinder engagement in beneficial activities.
His comments reflect a broader debate about the role of political leaders and opposition figures in addressing national issues, especially when it comes to balancing personal and public responsibilities.
