South Africa- Kwaito pioneer Doc Shebeleza has died.
Doc Shebeleza, real name Victor Bogopane, died Thursday morning after a prolonged illness.
He was 51.
His family confirmed the news, marking a sombre moment for the music industry, just days after the passing of fellow artist Winnie Khumalo last week.
Doc Shebeleza’s career soared in 1996 with the release of his debut album S’Kumfete, a project that brought hits like Kum’nandi, Ebumnandini, and Ghetsa Ghetsa to the forefront of the burgeoning kwaito scene.
As a founding member of the all-male group Amaskumfete, he further cemented his legacy with popular tracks such as Tsipa Tsipa.
Known for his ability to channel personal experiences, relationships, and struggles into his music, Shebeleza resonated with fans and inspired a generation of artists, including Mandoza and Mapaputsi.
Beyond his music, he turned to philanthropy, establishing Amaha to support and uplift fellow artists.
Shebeleza’s enduring influence was celebrated in 2014 when Cassper Nyovest released the chart-topping hit Doc Shebeleza, underscoring his impact on South African music across generations.
