Norton Member of Parliament, Honourable Richard Tsvangirai, has strongly urged citizens to oppose the Zanu PF regime’s efforts to extend President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s term of office beyond the constitutional limits.

While Mnangagwa’s second term is scheduled to end in 2028, hardliners within the Zanu PF party are advocating for a postponement of the elections, enabling the President, often referred to as the “Crocodile,” to remain in power.

In a statement released on Tuesday, Tsvangirai emphasized the importance of public resistance, saying, “If this motion to extend terms is set to be tabled when Parliament opens, the reality is grim—ZANU-PF’s two-thirds majority makes it almost certain to pass. However, since such an amendment requires a referendum, this is where every citizen must stand up and mobilize.”

He further stated, “The future of our democracy cannot be left in the hands of a self-serving few. We need to come together, raise awareness, and ensure every voice is heard. A referendum is not just a vote—it’s an opportunity for the people to reclaim their power and reject the erosion of democratic principles. The time to organize and resist is now.”

Richard Tsvangirai, the son of the late Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) founding president, Morgan Tsvangirai, has positioned himself as a vocal advocate for democratic integrity and citizens’ rights in Zimbabwe.
