By Sports Reporter-Former Zimbabwe Rugby administrator Aaron Jani has died.

Jani died at the age of 55 after a long battle with colon cancer.

He passed away on Wednesday after nearly a decade of fighting the illness, leaving a lasting legacy in Zimbabwean rugby.

“Yes, he had not been well for some time,” said Zimbabwe Rugby Union (ZRU) president Losson Mtongwiza. “He had been battling cancer for about a decade now, but in the last three or so months, he seemed to be in a lot of pain. It is indeed a sad note for our sport, losing a person, character, and passionate son like Aaron.”

Funeral arrangements are yet to be announced as the Union has decided to give the Jani family time to process his death.

Jani was a key figure in the administration of rugby in Zimbabwe, serving as the president of the Zimbabwe Rugby Union from 2017 to 2023.

Under his leadership, the sport saw notable strides in development, particularly in grassroots rugby and efforts to revive the national teams.

His tenure was marked by initiatives to increase youth participation, improve governance structures, and strengthen Zimbabwe’s standing in African and international rugby.

One of his significant achievements was the promotion of the Sables, Zimbabwe’s national rugby team, on the continental stage.

He played a crucial role in securing sponsorships and forging partnerships that helped sustain the game despite financial and logistical challenges.

His administration also focused on women’s rugby, pushing for greater inclusion and competitiveness in regional tournaments.

Beyond administration, Jani was a former player himself, having represented Zimbabwe in his youth.

His passion for the game was evident in his commitment to rugby development at all levels, from schools to the national league.
