Former Finance Minister Ignatius Chombo is set to sue President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s government for torture and unlawful detention.

Both Chombo and former ZANU OF Youth leader, Kudzanai Chipanga are in the window for a mass lawsuit against the government of Zimbabwe.

The two’s lawyer, Lovemore Madhuku, was quoted saying his clients will sue President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s administration if it does not apologise and offer them compensation.

Last week, Prof Lovemore Madhuku told ZimEye there is a string of wild allegations against Chombo including one of hiring mercenaries and yet the once which are official pertain to events dated several years back.

This time Madhuku told VOA Chombo and Chipanga have a right to sue for unlawful detention for the period they were detained by the military adding that his clients were tortured while they were in military custody.

“What next lawfully is that we first expect that the government will come and tell us that, ‘look, we were sorry we did this and here we are offering compensation.’

“They must apologize to our clients and then offer to pay them compensation for the period of unlawful detention. But if they do not do that we will take them up on that issue at the same time we will take it into account when this matter is going to be taken up.”

Chombo is charged with fraud, corruption and abuse of office during former President Robert Mugabe’s tenure, while Chipanga is accused of causing disaffection among the Zimbabwe Defence Forces.

  1. A good and shrewd lawyer knows which cases to take up or not, which cases to resolve publicly or privately thus building their names. Those who have never ‘lost’ cases are not good at arguing cases but know the said principle. But Madhuku is lost on this one. He is too hungry for the money. Advise Chombo from that. Remember he too stands to be sued for Murambatsvina. people were wronged but they have let sleeping dogs sleep.

  2. It’s like trying to dowse fire with petrol. He is ill-advising his clients. If government is able to prove that Chombo held back critical information and evidence to investigators, what will they do next? The money in the ceiling, the dead snipers’ bodies all fake stories nhai? If Chombo’s exwife Marian is taken in as a state witness, with her knowledge of the workings dza Chombo and his staggering ownership of properties including 148 low density houses all over Zimbabwe etc, can Madhuku really extricate his client from this mire? I need to ask here; “In which country is torturing not done when a witness holds back information?”, maybe excepting Finland. And Im not saying its good. But it is commonplace even in leading proponents of human rights such as US, UK, France.

  3. Madhuku, you will worsen the predicament of these guys. Okey. Remebmer their is a political case, and you will do the two no good by escalating it further. Remebmer Chombo has a lot skeletons on his cupboard. We are still awake to the fact that Chombo is the person who told President Mugabe that let there be “a Special congress’ meant to chase Munangagwa away from Zanu and the country. You have to be careful oldman. I hope they will tell you the truth. Why do you want to behave as if Chombo is already off the hook? Stop being irresponsible Madhuku. Remember you were also once in jail for 5 years

  4. Lawyers are like flies. They have no principles. They like to congregate around dirty, rotting and smelly stuff (read dhodi). All for the love of money.

  5. Is this not too early nhai Madhuku? Your clients still have cases to answer and you are already thinking of lawsuits?

  6. Why are you afraid of suing General Chiwenga direct??? Mnangagwa is just a front for these military guys ,go for the head of the main snake as former First Lady used to say.
