By Farai D Hove| Gen Constantino Chiwenga could emerge SADC’s Paul Kagame, observers said yesterday.

Even MDC Spokesman Obert Gutu wrote out saying “Constantino Guvheya Chiwenga is now the new Minister of Defence, over and above being the Vice President of Zimbabwe. He who owns the piper calls the tune. Res ipsa loquitur… The facts speak for themselves.”

News readers on Friday morning reacted to the just ended swearing in ceremony of VPs claiming that President Emmerson Mnangagwa has given Gen. Constantino Chiwenga too much power by appointing him not only Vice President but also Defence Minister and furthermore War Veterans Minister.

One Emmanuel Chinyama said of Mnangagwa seeing the just ended coup, “all he needs to consolidate power at all cost but this time it will not work, trust me.”

Similar fears were also sounded by a Mnangagwa family member. “What you don’t know is that right now the real President running the show is Chiwenga,” a Mnangagwa nephew who refused to be named told ZimEye.com

Another contributor, Obrian Kavhuru said, “Mnangagwa is not in control, period.”

– REACTIONS:

Meanwhile, it was recalled that Gen Chiwenga during the war, occupied the expelled Saviour Kasukuwere’s powerful post of Party Commissar and Mnangagwa has in recent days even publicly referred Chiwenga as such, a position that has been the pivot of all ZANU PF squabbles since independence and that has seen the sudden death of many commissars.

  1. How can you have a Minister of Defence who is clueless on which part of a rifle a bullet comes from or who doesn’t understand when a parade says they want to present arms in salute?

The gun ndokuti politicians whether you like it or not. Ask Donald Trump he was an officer in the US Army, McCain was actually captured in war in Vietnan.

When someone leaves the uniformed forces he becomes civilian and ordinarily should revert back to title Mr/Mrs/Ms/Dr etc.

I wonder why people here always want to talk about retired this, retired that. Leave the ranks out of civilian life for Christ’ sake.

  2. Seems the opposition are exposing themselves for being too stupid to understand that soldiers are citizens and can aspire tpo be anything they want in the country including being presidents. Whats funny about Chiwenga being Min of Defence? He is perfectly qualified for the job. Hopw can you have someone who does not know which end of a rifle a bullet comes from as Minister of Defence?

The best Politicians are always people with military background. For instance the young man Nelson Chamisa could have ben a good politician if he knew how to present arms.

  3. The most feared person in Africa is the people of Zimbabwe. Zimbabweans defeated Mugabe on their own in 2008 but we were denied by the soldiers. You are greater than CHIWENGA. I cherish you most. I salute you for your patients. Your last battle is to return to civil rule before you can attract meaningful investment . God bless you

  4. I don’t agree with you. Mugabe remains the most feared. It took 37 years for Zimboz to remove Mugabe. SADCC, EU and AU were scared of him. During his days, noone could utter a word. Hw can you give credit to someone who has fort a 93 year old, tired, granny who was already messing his pants. I give the first position to Mugabe and 2nd to Morgan. The general used guns on a weapon less G40

  5. Mugabe once gave such powers (except VP) to Didymus Mutasa, but he knew how to pull him in when he got wayward. The office of state wields a lot of power. Ko maida kuti defence ipiwe aniko, Juao here?

  6. Those that listened to Music in the early 80s will recall a Job Mashanda “Hodi Pano song”. Part of the lilic thus run, “munhu haana chakanaka ho odi pano, nyangwe umuiitire zvipi ho odi pano”, went the song. There is a sad thing that crosses my mind when the Press write about the military getting into politics especially in Zimbabwe.

I think we all have to recall that Zimbabwe got independence through politics driven by the gun. This simply means that majority of the people that went to war became politicians first and soldiers later. Therefore most ex-combatants are politicians who wore military regalia. So the processes unfolding in Zanu PF are normal events givens its DNA.

The assertion that Mnangagwa in neither the power nor the national chief executive officer is neither here nor there. The appointments in particular that of Chiwenga are in my view informed by two scenerios. The need for the consolidation of food security programs through command agriculture and efficacy in defence forces management. We saw how effective and disciplined our man in coloured uniform during the Operation Restore Legacy. That is a first in the world and it therefore makes a lot of sense to retain the architect of such a milestone with the ranks and files of defence system.

It has to be remember that the military component of Zanu Pf had in the past let civilians run the party’s affairs with dismal results coming for the nation. In fighting, theft and neglect were orders of the day. Then there were self serving comrades such as Mandi Chimene etc.

  7. This is ridiculous. Chiwenga is now a retired general. So how does he get feared in retirement. he was given the defence portfolio because He is the best candidate for that from the two. Mohadi would have made a good defence minister but chiwenga will be better.People want to pretend Chiwengas years in service were not about heading the country”s defence. It makes logical sense to give him that portfolio.
