salary upset for 2 months…Zim army

Reuters/Staff Reporter| Zimbabwe has failed to pay the army for the second straight month, on time, military sources said yesterday, underscoring the precarious financial position of President Robert Mugabe’s government as it faces rare popular protests.
The development confirms how the army could not be used to quash protests last week in a a sequel of events that saw Police Spokesperson, Charity Charamba rushing to claim that the soldiers were not needed to stem the civic unrest, as she attacked ZimEye.com for publishing the breaking news (click here to read).
The military is paid on the 14th of the month, but soldiers and air force officers said they were still to receive their pay and had not been given an alternative date.

The delays are likely to fuel tensions in the southern African nation, which has been hit by drought, a drop in mineral prices and chronic cash shortages — all factors behind this month’s popular protests against 92-year-old Mugabe.
“The mood is sour among the rank and file. Life is tough and we are not being told by our superiors whether we will be paid this month or not,” one private said.
One colonel said even senior officers were in the dark about when their pay was going to arrive.
There was no comment from Finance minister Patrick Chinamasa, who was attending an African Union summit in Rwanda with Mugabe.
Army spokesman Lieutenant Colonel Alphios Makotore could not be reached for comment. — Reuters

  3. You are an idiot who appears to know politicos but you know nothing. Without any army kanaRenamo inouya ikakwira mai vako wakatarisa, mbwa yemunhu. ENDE UNOVATA!

  4. Anyway does he need those soldiers at all? A waste of resources. If the government cuts the size of the undesired elements which are non productive and only bringing misery to the nation then the government wouldn’t be broke. Why does it need 30% of the population to be CIOs? Why does it need thousands of policemen who are not bothered about any crime except blocking our roads for bribes and abusing people who want to exercise their rights? Why need the army which is there to go and fight in foreign countries and help to abuse innocent citizens?
