“I’m Not White, I’m Greek” – Mugabe Stalwart Claims

Three generations of Peter Haritatos’ family have owned bakeries amid the rocky outcrops jutting up at the centre of the Kadoma mining area, which provides gold, copper and nickel here.

He is popular in town, and speaks fluent Shona. Haritatos is just one of the locals, he even has a Shona nickname — Baba George, meaning “George’s dad.” But he is pliant. And in Zimbabwe, where President Robert Mugabe’s ruling Zanu PF party and an army of war veterans have violently driven white farmers away in a chaotic land reform programme, Haritatos — who is the Zanu PF MP for Muzvezve — has not been a target. Against this backdrop of fear and retaliation, Haritatos took a stand in a dramatic denial last week, rejecting his race. “I am not white, I am Greek,” declared Haritatos.

This made top Zanu PF officials at a Mhondoro-Ngezi gathering last week extremely happy. Haritatos pumped his clenched fist in the air and shouted “VaMugabe chete chete (only)!” in near fluent Shona. The slogan-master again shouted the Zanu PF cry — to which the party apparatchiks again responded “Forward with VaMugabe!” He is choosing more and more to play ball with an increasingly oppressive government. Haritatos — who was born in Greece and relocated to Zimbabwe in the 1950’s — said he grew up in Zimbabwe at a time European immigrants still faced discrimination.

“I was also segregated by whites,” Haritatos said. His father was a master baker who settled in Kadoma, where his son now runs the Central Bakery and Confectionery, continuing the family business tradition.

“When I wanted to attend Jameson High School, I was told I should go to Sanyati. I was only 12-years-old but was already facing discrimination, all because I was Greek. So I am not white.”
Haritatos said his experience fostered his belief in Zanu PF ideologies, apparently dismissing suggestions that he is supporting the ruling party as a way to protect his investments. Many foreign investors so badly needed by Zimbabwe’s economy have looked on land seizures in cold economic light.

They view re-appropriation measures as a serious threat to economic stability. In the context of presidential elections next year, Mugabe’s success, or lack of it, on the economic front will be crucial.

It is unclear as yet whether he is working towards his own re-election or engineering a favourable situation for a possible successor.
The appointment of Emmerson Mnangagwa, as vice president, has been interpreted by many observers as amounting to the nomination of a favoured successor. Mugabe might, in fact, serve his country best by gracefully retiring.
But Haritatos said through his loyalty, he was appointed to the Senate by Mugabe in 2005 to represent Zimbabwe’s dwindling white minority.
His supporters say he is a man who has genuine interest towards the community, and who has either built or refurbished public toilets and shower blocks in his constituency.

“I also got independent in 1980. I was not allowed to attend Jameson High School, but my children went to learn there,” Haritatos said as the crowd cheered.

“Ndinoera shumba (My totem is a lion).” Haritatos spoke after Mashonaland West minister of State Faber Chidarikire had slammed Zimbabwe’s white community for atrocities perpetrated before 1980.
“Whites did only want us to end at Standard Six and then you go into farms and work, it was exploitation of the highest order,” Chidarikire said. “The whites would take you to their farms but they would not be transport such that if a person was not happy with the conditions they would go home. It was a form of slavery.
“You would get there and then the shopkeeper would give you blankets and the like, and then you work but when you asked for your salary you would be told you owe money.

  1. I read he Trump news from his own people daily. I read very little of mainstream news as I do not think they are authentic outlets. In UK we have tabloids and broadsheets both printing fake news daily.

When you read about Trump from Trump, you get the authentic news and it clearly shows he is a fascist nearly on par with Mugabe and just below Kim-JU.

It is why Mugabe was really looking forward to Trumps win of elections. It turns out Mugabe likes Trump but Trump does not like Mugabe and his friend Museveni.

  2. It is encouraging that Mtwakasians are past that.

Now the same Shonas want another gukurahundi in Masvingo Province. They see it as an achievement to kill thousands of people just because the victims are seen as of a different tribe. The Gukurahundists are proud to be such. They are planning another in Neshuro area. ZANU PF will supply weapons and manpower and see it as a project worthy of the effort.

A person has to be sick in the head and in body to fail to appreciate that thinking like that is wrong.

  3. Be careful about putting people into groups. You know about Mugabe but what do you know about Trump? You heard from mainstream media that he is not good so you repeat it? Obama was v bad. He made some bad decisions for his masters. You like him because he is black? And, you dislike Trump because of what? You are busy passing judgement against a man God picked meaning you are now questioning God’s decisions?

  4. The colour and tribe of an individual is a Shona obsession – more so of those of ZANU PF Gukurahundi upbringing. Not in Mthwakazi!

  5. If in this day and age, they are still crying for their so called “cattle and women”; surely; the only African on the African continent from Cape to Cairo who still sing that old tired song, you would expect the idiots to continue talking about whites, even if the those same whites are almost gone in Zim – zilch. There are villages, towns and cities in that country where you can spend days on end without meeting even one single white person. But they never tire of shouting about whites. They are sick upstairs; they need psychological reconditioning!!

  6. Seriously still talking about whites did this..whites did that …whites did not want us to this…yet Zanu pf is the party that has been the architect of black poverty.

  7. In 2017, 35 years after majority rule, Zimbabwe is still obsessed with what colour an individual is. We live in a global village now and our obsession should be how to build our markets and earn a living and how to produce goods cheaply and sell them at the highest profit. What colour a person might be should not be of any material importance.

Mugabe, Trump, Farage, etc should be archived as specimens of how not to lead.

  8. Well teh question for Haritatos is did he go to Sanyati School. You cannot deny your colour. we can all see that Haritatos is a white Greek. So whether he likes it or not Haritatos is White. The Smith regime was built on colour and Haritatos no matter how much Shona he speaks is White. I went to school with White Greek girls so I know Haritatos was not segregated against. He is pleasing silly Zanupf men and women. Haritatos is clever. He knows where his bread is buttered and is just humouring Zanupf dickheads!!!
