Terrence Mawawa, Masvingo|MDC National Youth Assembly leader Happymore Chidziva is facing treason charges for allegedly attempting to unconstitutionally remove President Robert Mugabe from power.
As state security agents remain alert, fearing what they say is a looming popular uprising against Mugabe’s government, Chidziva popularly known as’Cde Bvondo’ was arrested in Masvingo last week. He was charged with incitement and treason following claims by the police that he threatened to remove Mugabe from power by force.
Chidziva who was on the police wanted list for two months was arrested after he handed himself over to the police. The treason charges stem from a youth meeting he addressed in Chiredzi last month. The police accused him of attempting to unseat Mugabe through violent means.The police also accused him of inciting Gutu villagers to grab food aid.
Chidziva who was later released after being interrogated by the police said he was not intimidated by the incident.
“The police are being used by Zanu PF to derail the train of change.I heard the police in Masvingo were looking for me so I decided to go there .I was arrested and they leveled atrocious charges against me. Zanu PF is using all state apparatus at its disposal to crush dissent but we will not be intimidated.They think if they arrest me,I will be intimidated. They can slow the process but they will never stop us.We will never remove Mugabe from power by force,” said Chidziva.
As the nation continues to grapple with socio-economic woes,the government could face widespread protests across the nation,analysts have warned.
