Former Public Services, Labour and Social Welfare minister Patrick Zhuwao is quitting politics and does not intend to return home soon after former president Robert Mugabe was toppled last month.
Zhuwao, who is Mugabe’s nephew, said he had no regrets serving under the 93-year-old ruler who was forced to resign by the military on November 21.
“I am proud to have served under President Robert Mugabe,” he said in an interview from South Africa at an undisclosed location.
“I was loyal to him during his tenure as president and I even today I am still loyal to him, much than loyalty I could have exhibited as his nephew,” Zhuwao added.
“From a personal point of view, I am grateful to those who stood by Mugabe.
“My political life existed for the duration of President Mugabe’s tenure.
“The options that were there politically for me was to become disloyal to him and that to me was not acceptable.
“The decision by him to accept to be forced out was largely informed by his desire not to see the people of Zimbabwe go into a period of turbulence.
“My appeal to those that keep our faith, religious people, is for them to pray for those who are in power to be humane and not persecute people.”
Zhuwao, a son of Mugabe’s late sister Sabina, said his safety was not guaranteed if he returned to Zimbabwe. He said workers at his farm outside Harare had been attacked during the army’s operation.
“I am not coming,” he said. “When one looks at attacks launched on my farm and farm workers who were frog-marched and severely beaten just for working for me, it is enough evidence that my safety is not guaranteed. My farm was looted too.
“People can say I ran away, yes I did. It’s better than to wait to be killed.”
Meanwhile, Zhuwao claimed Zimbabweans will miss his uncle despite thousands of people taking to the streets during his last days as they demanded his resignation.
“If you look at the current political leadership, it’s like having gone through a period under a leader who was meticulous and principled and then serving under anybody else will soil my track record,” he said.
“I also find it rather awkward for some leaders who want to blame President Mugabe yet when decisions were made, they were part of the collective.”
He scoffed at Mnangagwa’s three-month amnesty for Zimbabweans that externalised money and assets to return the loot.
“I read the statement and said to myself is this the president who claimed to have studied law,” he said.
“He must have given legal provisions to support his order. I expect him to go back to law and see if his order is by any chance supported.
“However, what I know is that there is money that was looted through diamonds.
“This is one area where huge sums of money were being externalised. They must come clean on that.” – The Standard

RGM will not be missed by 95 % of Zimbos.The man lost direction big time.He betrayed the ideals of the revolution. He thought the war of liberation was to make him and his family the only important persons in Zim.He killed many Zimbos, far more than Ian Smith. In fact life was far better under Smith for black Zimbos than under RGM. He was the profesor of corruption, incompetance and naivity.Some say he was a clver person. I disagree. He was a great fool . How on earth does a clver person think they can rule for 37 years and still be useful. How does a clver person president over the collapse of a country and still want to remain in office ? A clever person would have resigned for the sake the common good and let same one else take over.
Fellow Zimbos we made abig mistake in 1980 by voting for RGM and Zanupf. I did , yes I voted for them and I am sorry I did because by that action I let Zimbabwe down. I am sorry. Now felow Zimbos is time to learn from this experiance and never to give a blank cheque to any leader in future.Most political leaders are not in it for the nation, but for themselves. RGM was not in it for the nation- he never was patriotic for if he was he would not have done waht he has done in the last 20 years.

Unfortunately, the people are not the revolutionary. They showed this by being used by the Army to demonstrate against Mugabe, when they had no idea of the agenda. You can not just march and remove someone; so what? We have the same Ministers, the Army and same thuggery tricks of pretending to bring corrupt people to book. Soon it will fizzle out, as they will not like to set a precedent, lest they will face the same fate, when they also loose power.
Dear Zhuwao, thanks for reaching out. I am not ZANU PF, but I agree with you for once that we are going to regret under Mnangagwa and, his army colleagues as they are too naive, and obsessed with power. My appeal to you though, and the other in self exile is to help us unmask the new, looters, who have started hoodwinking people that, they are clean. We all know they are not, but we need inside information. Never say never, once politician, always a politician.

The difference is exactly the same between Mr Zhuwao staying or quitting politics as he was never beneficial to the nation and his function was imaginary and sometimes positives detrimental to the welfare of the nation.
His statement clearly shows he did not fully pr partially appreciate his own ineffectiveness and that there was no quality control procedures in his uncle’s government. It is also highly unlikely that the decision making he alleges happened through what he calls a collective. More likely there was rule by decree as is the case now.
He will survive if he too externalised diamond money, like the Gens (and their handlers) did.
