The town council’s chairperson, Tsungai Makore said the project, which included computerisation of the billing system which started in October and will run until November 2015 seeks to address the billing problems that the authority had been facing.
“We have been facing problems in our billing system since it is done manually, but the computerisation programme will help us eliminate irregularities in the system where residents are either under or overcharged,” Makore said.
The project is being carried out under the UNICEF’s Water, Sanitation and Hygiene programme, with Shurugwi being among the 14 towns set to benefit from the project.
Council secretary, Solomon Siziba said a call centre to receive enquiries and complaints would also be established.
“We are grateful for this boost because it will improve the interface between council and the residents,” Siziba said.
He said the UN agency had also funded the replacement of aging water pipes at the municipality while the funding was expected to improve the water situation in the town. _The Source
