President Robert Mugabe’s Zanu PF extended its grip on power after being unopposed in several constituencies or facing little-known independents and minor opposition parties.
The constituencies voting on Wednesday included seats in Harare and Bulawayo that had been held by the opposition Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) since 2000.
The MDC formations pulled out of the election alleging intimidation of supporters, media bias and being denied access to the electoral roll, which they claimed was stuffed with names of deceased voters.
“The ruling Zanu PF romped to victory after sweeping all the 16 contested constituencies in yesterday’s by-elections,” the ZBC radio reported.
The elections were held after the MDC-T fired 14 lawmakers who formed a splinter party, and two other MPs were expelled from Zanu PF for being aligned to former vice-president Joice Mujuru.
Mujuru was sacked by Mugabe in December after she was accused of plotting to unseat him.
Elections in Zimbabwe are usually a one-horse race for Zanu PF, which has ruled since the country gained independence from Britain in 1980.
MDC leader Morgan Tsvangirai had urged his supporters to spoil their ballot papers.

  3. If any opposition would get advise from a malcontent like you then Zim politics will go to the pigs, your comments are a waste of space. In politics you dont only consider the visible variables you also think of other futuristic implications of your decision today, under the circumstances Tsvangirai has done well to prove he is the only formidable opposition currently.

  5. What more can they now do which they could not do before, we are tired of this much ado about nothing. Its exorbitantly foolish to contest in an election where the playing field is in favor of the ruling party. Wake up and smell the coffee. Dabengwa contested and what did he get? Madhuku and sundry they contested did they prove any meaningful point than giving ZANU PF a punching bag.

  6. This is the problem of Zimbabweans.We claim to know and misinform the people.Can you tell me why Themba Mliswa’s Hurungwe seat was up for grabs? Mliswa was booted out of ZANU, and the constitution is clear.A by election has to follow once an MP ceases to be an affiliate of the party which got him in the seat.So when Biti and company said the formed renewal team, it was the same.They changed affiliation and so by elections had to follow.Tell me your problems besides ignorance.Tsvangirai never did anything wrong by recalling the MPs.They broke away, and started to be an opposition within an opposition.So they had to go out and come back as renewal.This is cheap rubbish talk of seats donated.
    The renewal must work hard on their party and it is clear to all sober people that the renewal expelled themselves.Please Zimbabeans must stop confusing the electorate.The constitution is clear.Unfortunately some of the renewal MPs were shortsighted.They cpould not see that the bigger picture of renewal was not of democracy, but personal gains.Once again Zimbabweans call themselves educated but can not interpret a simple parliamentary statute.The green grass is now yellow for renewal guys.All the hype and fyling is over.By now you could have turned the whole country orange as you promised.Politics is for the tried and tested, not the tired and terrible.

  9. Zanu PF must be very grateful to the army and the thugs for effectively intimidating the hapless villagers of Hurungwe. Vamwe vanhu havanyare shuwa.
