Another senior veteran of the liberation struggle, former cabinet minister, Dr Fay Chung this morning made a solidarity appearance at the war vets spokesperson, Douglas Mahiya’s bail hearing. Mahiya was soon freed after Chung’s entrance on USD 300, which his family is reported to have paid.
The court had been adjourned to 3pm after the Mugabe-controlled compromised state prosecutors fought against an earlier grant for bail.
Magistrate Chikwekwe had granted Mahiya the $300 bail in the morning, but the State invoked section 121 as amended by the 2016 Amendment to the criminal procedures and evidence act.
Chung joins other senior veterans of the liberation struggle, who have taken a stand against state harassment in the case of Mahiya. Former Vice-President Joice Mujuru was also in court this morning.
Chung’s Background :With the escalation of the guerrilla war inside Rhodesia, in 1973 Chung joined the Zimbabwe African National Union (ZANU). Her participation with a banned political organisation drove her into exile in Tanzania, and later Mozambique in the mid- and late-70s where she learnt to speak Shona fluently. Her initial role within ZANU was in the Information and Media Department; she subsequently became the senior official responsible for implementing the movement’s teacher training and curriculum development in refugee camps.

They were taught a twisted history by Mugabe that tells them they are the owners of the country. All their historical narratives start with the coming of King Mzilikazi. The history prior to that, where they were the aggressors and land invaders is conveniently ignored. Its a waste of time. When a people refuse to be reasonable and objective you simply resort to putting them in their place. So far I have resoundly succeeded in this.

I have had meaningful exchanges with you on this platform. In one of your postings you argued that post-1980 the majority of Shonas developed a negative attitude towards Ndebele. You pointed out that a Shona could live in Matebeleland for ten years but still profess to be unable to speak Ndebele. I took that to be a valid argument. But on this posting you seem to be demonstrating the superiority complex that you accuse the Shonas of showing. Dr Chung is a Zimbabwean who comes from a different language background but decided to learn another Zimbabwean language in order to blend with fellow Zimbabweans and, in the process, advance the cause of unifying the country. For you to be derogative as you do in this posting is unfortunate to say the least. It is now difficult for you to convince Zimbabweans that you have a case that needs attention. I think you have gone down to a level where you can now be viewed as a joke. There are so many postings on this platform by people from southern Zimbabwe in which they complain about the injustices of gukurahundi, but I still have to find one that is so unreasonable as yours. You are free to complain about the injustices that Shonas might have inflicted on your tribe but you should do so humanely so that people will take you seriously. Stop making a caricature of yourself.

The majority of Zimbabweans spoke Shona language before the invasion of Guruuswa region by those from Zululand. What that means is that those who dream of a separate State in Zimbabwe can go on dreaming in vain.The majority of us Zimbabweans will not allow the glorification of those whose invading ancestors looted cattle and took into slavery young men & women our ancestors.
