By Paul Nyathi| First Lady Auxillia Mnangagwa is flying to Gwanda on Friday to spend the day sharing Christmas goodies with orphaned children from various orphanages in Gwanda.
In her real first public appearance following her commitment to spend most of her time doing charity work than being involved in mainstream politics, the first lady is expected to host at least 500 orphans at rural Makwe Centre in Gwanda North.
Announcing the First Lady’s visit to the province at a funeral held in Gwanda on Monday, Minister of State for Matabeleland South Abednico Ncube said that the visit by the First Lady is a state event which invites all members of the community from all political divides.
Sources close to the visit however claim that the First Lady’s visit was arranged months ago while Grace Mugabe was still the first lady.
The sources indicated to ZimEye.com that all the goodies and food hampers to be distributed at the ceremony had already been sourced and secured by the former first lady ahead of the ceremony.
Last week Mrs Mnangagwa also distributed food hampers to ZANU PF delegates to the party’s special congress amidst reports that the hampers had also been previously sourced by Grace Mugabe who was to give them to the delegates as her Christmas gifts at the end of the congress.
Zimbabweans have been making calls on Mrs Mnangagwa to be a different First Lady from Grace Mugabe who mingled in politics and eventually led to the fall of Former President Robert Mugabe as she wanted to position herself to succeed her husband.
