(Shropshire, UK)A 40-year-old Zimbabwean man who was part of a cheque scam described in court as sophisticated, has joined the roll of registered criminals in the United Kingdom.
Mr. Simba Lawrence, jailed for two years, was found guilty of ganging up with two friends in their 20s to take part in erasing the details on cheques allowing them to be rewritten for their own use.
Shrewsbury Crown Court Tuesday heard that Lawrence’s gang would then fill the cheques in with new details before withdrawing the money a few hours later.
Cheques totalling £5,332.37 were paid in by the gang on December 18, 2009.
The court heard that the gang began their activities across Shropshire in 2009 according to Mr Daniel White, who was prosecuting.
Police investigations found that the gang targeted Lloyds TS
B banks since that bank unlike others, allows people to withdraw paid-in cheques on the same day, Mr White said.
Card readers and bank cards were found in the gang’s van, the court heard.
Lawrence’s solicitor said the Zimbabwean is no longer legally allowed to work in the UK and so was struggling financially. He said: “He’s embarked on this because of his issues.”
Lawrence has admitted four charges of converting criminal property conspiracy to convert criminal property, possessing 13 bank cards and possessing 24 bank cards.
