By Terrence Mawawa, Masvingo |War veterans in Masvingo have made a sudden U-turn against their former minister Chris Mutsvangwa and switched allegiance to First Lady Grace Mugabe. In a dramatic twist of events, war veterans here announced at separate meetings held at Roy Business Centre and the Chief’s Hall, the former freedom fighters in Masvingo had nothing to do with the troubled Mutsvangwa whose ship is navigating stormy waters.
The war veterans also took turns to bootlick Mrs Mugabe describing her as an icon. Ironically the same ex-fighters openly attacked the First Lady ahead of President Robert Mugabe’s birthday bash in February. The latest development is seen as a body blow to the Team Lacoste camp said to be backing Vice President Emmerson Mnangagwa.
In resolutions passed at the two separate meetings, they concurred they were fully behind Mugabe and his wife.
George Mlala, the interim war veterans interim chairman for Masvingo province, reiterated members loyal to Mutsvangwa would be sacked. “There has been a major twist of events.
“We welcome Mutsvangwa’s dismissal because he soiled our reputation by purporting to represent the war veterans yet he had his own vendetta against the party leadership. We want to make it clear that we support the First Lady. She never insulted us.
“Mutsvangwa took it upon himself to attack the First Lady.
“Who does Mutsvangwa think he is? He sponsored factionalism to gratify his wounded ego,” said Mlala who is believed to be a staunch Grace Mugabe sympathiser.
Another war veteran Isaiah Muzanda also said:”we support the First Family and we have nothing to do with Mutsvangwa.”
The development has all but ended Mnangagwa’s firm control of the former freedom fighters’ association in Masvingo province.

I do not feel pity for Mr Mutsvangwa at all. Let him taste the bitter taste of his own medicine. This is the man who not so long ago denigrated his former colleagues (the gamatoxes) using big words. He is a pompous and abrasive man who thinks using high sounding vocabulary passes for sophistication. Not that I support any of the factions and the circus presently playing out within Zanu Pf, but it is on record how Mutsvangwa was at the forefront of lashing Mujuru and company. For a former ambassador he does not possess the finesse of a diplomat.

What we are witnessing in ZANUpf today is a culmination of problems that have been simmering from soon after independence. At the heart of the problem is Robert Mugabe, a man who has pursued power for its sake through out his leadership of the part and the country. Had he passed on the baton at some point the script of our history would have been entirely different. The mess of 2007-9 would never have been witnessed and I am willing to bet all I have that the exodus of millions of sons and daughters of this country to far-flung places around the world would never have happened and so the needless deaths through curable and preventable ailments, drowning and croc attacks in the Limpopo river not to mention the June,2008 election run-off murders. This country could still be having a currency of its on. Then there is ZANUpf the party itself which deified Mugabe and were willingly led, like sheep, to believe that Mugabe was the glue holding the party together. The generality of the party were willing to be used like the fools they are to do anything, from arson, rape, abductions to murder to keep Mugabe at number 1 Chancellor Ave. They were used and were forever willing to turn against their kith and kin in the name of the party. It was pure, unadulterated evil. Then off course we have the warvets who ditched or were used to torment the very people they are supposed to have liberated. They became incarnates of the devil and perpetrated terrible evil on the innocent sons and daughters of this country and all, to protect one Robert Mugabe and keep him in power ad-infinitum. And when evil is done on Zimbabweans the people, it is inadvertently done on Zimbabwe the country. ZANUpf and Zimbabwe have been incompatible for decades and because of that both could not survive. Because of Mugabe’s scotched earth police instead of ZANUpf dying at the right time, it has had to die a slow death along with our beloved country thanks to Mugabe and all those who followed him and worshiped him as if he and he alone created this country with his bare hands.

When empty vessels meet, the noise is just astonishing. War vets have been told they are nothing by Grace. So joining her does not mean they are something now. In Karanga we say “shoko harivhikwe”(you can not block words out of the mouth). And by saying that , grace knew what she was saying and still believed in it.Only a few have been given hand outs and now turn against Mutsvangwa. Mutsvangwa must walk tall as he has demonstrated independence in his execution of duties. You can not just tow the line blindly. Zimbabweans are well known for their selfishness wherever you go in the world. They think for themselves, and rarely do they think for the greater good. This has been the cancer eating us for a long time. Once someone is in position, the issue becomes of staying there for good and making sure he is well fed. Others are only necessary when it comes to structural support. By saying Mutsvangwa disrespected the first lady, that is rubbish. Mutsvangwa never talked about the first lady. He always talked about guarding the party from a clique of gangsters who would like to make everyone their child by stifling debate and constructive negotiations. Zimbabwe is a far cry from democracy. Why cant we learn from Zambians, South Africans, Mozambicans and Malawians? This is pathetic. In South Africa, anyone who is in the ANC is free to challenge the president at the congress. If you lose , you still keep your job, no purging.
When the state fears its people, there is democracy. But when the people fear their state, there is anarchy and repression. War vets are supposed to be asking the US 15 billion if they want to talk sense. Castigating Mutsvangwa will only confirm their foolishness just as Grace said. At this point in time, clever people refuse to be used as the politics of Zimbabwe is heading towards a surprising destination. Only insensible people can hold a case against Mutsvangwa who has stood firm against personalisation of the party. Not supporting ZANU of course, but it pains me to see dictatorship within a dictatorship.
