Cyril Ramaphosa has won the race to become the new ANC president.

The announcement was made just before 7pm after delays, a dramatic campaign season, and fears that the ANC’s elective conference would end in shambles.

Supporters cheered when the ANC electoral commission’s announcement was made, after waiting more than an hour for commission officials to arrive to declare the winners.

Ramaphosa won 2 440 votes to Nkosazana Dlamini- Zuma’s 2 261.

The commission’s Bontle Mpakanyane said 4 708 votes were cast, of the 4 776 total number of credentials.

Speculation mounted during the day that Ramaphosa had taken the leadership, with Jackson Mthembu anticipating the result.

“We have looked at the numbers. CR17 campaign has not talked about numbers, but we know that we have more than 2 389 to win this conference if you include our PECs that are in Western Cape, Eastern Cape, Gauteng and Northern Cape,” Mthembu said.

Prior to the announcement, delegates sang songs in support of both Dlamini-Zuma and Ramaphosa. Up on stage, members of the party’s national executive committee shared hugs as they waited. In one moment, ANC chairperson Baleka Mbete became tearful.

The mood inside the Nasrec centre was rapturous for much of the proceedings, but those in Dlamini-Zuma’s camp, particularly supporters from KwaZulu-Natal, appeared disappointed.

The other top six positions are as follows:

Deputy President:

David Mabuza. Mabuza got 2 538 votes to Lindiwe Sisulu’s 2 159.

National Chairperson:

Gwede Mantashe.

With seven spilt ballots and 14 abstentions, Mantashe got 2 416 votes to Nathi Mthethwa’s 2 269.

Secretary General:

Ace Magashule.

With 4 spoilt ballots and 8 abstentions, Magashule got 2 360 votes to Senzo Mchunu’s 2 336.

Deputy secretary general:

Jessie Duarte

With 4 spoilt ballots and 17 abstentions, Jessie Duarte got 2 474 votes to Zingiswa Losi’s 2 213.

Treasurer-general:

Paul Mashatile

With 6 spoilt ballots and 7 abstentions, Mashatile got 2517 votes to Maite Nkoana-Mashabane 2178

  1. Batswana. This is a 105-year old movement. The Oldest Liberation Movement on the African continent formed in 1912. ZANU can only be green with envy; given their tribal politics and dictatorship. Their leaders are never subjected to competitive elections!!

  2. You seem to forget that the ANC has been led by people from different tribes in the past, including Sothos, Pedis and Batawana!

  3. No man. You need to understand the Political dynamics of that time when Ramaphosa missed out. It was nothing to do with tribe. It had all to do with succession planning that had long taken place, by the ANC elders in exile. Ramaphosa was internal, not an exile and Mandela had been in prison – he didnt know much of what transpired in exile, though his intentions were noble!

  4. Zim had what they called Gukurahundi. SA has never had such. Zim had Mugabe. SA had Nelson Mandela. Zim has one side of the country which embraces only their language – Shona. SA has all regions and all tribes embracing every language. That is why Zim has been a disaster. That is the difference!!

  5. Ooooh Whatta Country! Mzansi fo sho – ooooh whatta country!!

You have shamed the Shona Gukurahundis – shame shame shame. You wou;ldnt even say SA once had a tribal Homelands system!!

We have, as Matebeleland been saying Mzansi is hundreds of years ahead of Zim , but some among the Shonas have always been trying to justify Zim’s tribalism with – ooh but there is tribalism as well in SA. Some even claimed Ramaphosa, as a Venda was being denied leadership of the country because of tribalism.

Not so – hold your horses. I have always said – whilst tribalism is definitely there is SA, its not a major issue as it is in Zim. Now look – the proof of the pudding is in the eating. There is no talk of, or obsession with Shaka compared to Shona daily obsession with tribal wars of 200 years ago. !

For the first time, despite Zulus being the majority tribe, there is no single Zulu or KZN representation in the ANC’s top 6.

Like we do vote for Shona leaders in Matebeleland, in Mzansi, Zulus in particular also voted for Vendas (Ramaphosa), Sothos (Ace Magashule), Ndebele (DD Mabuza), Portuguese/Coloured (Jessie Duarte), Xhosa (Gwede Mantashe) and Tsonga/Shangaan (Paul Mashatile).

And as for Zim – 37 years down the line? We still hear Nyika yedu, Dzokerayi, Andinzwi – shame shame shame!!

In Mzansi – you can speak your Sotho and I speak my Xhosa – we still understand each other. You can speak your Tswana, and I speak my Sepedi – we still understand each other. You can speak your Zulu and I speak my Venda we still understand each other. There is no andinzwi anywhere you go in Mzansi – you are sjust at home.

This is testimony to the visionary leadership of one of the greatest Statesman on earth – Nelson Mandela – “Now, it is all in your hands. Yet you hear some misguided young ignorant minds claim Mandela sold out!!!”

Now compare and contrast this leadership with Mugabe’s exclusively pro-Shona Politics; Gukurahundi, Murambatswina, 1979 Grand Plan – Pure Prime Evil dare I say!!

  6. Bedroom coup??? Give credit to the woman. She has been divorced for over 20 years and those who do not like her knew that if they use the Zuma card it will work. She is a woman who does not have a scandal unlike Cyril who was long bought by capitalist who gave them shares in Anglo and now he will bring Pravin back who is also a captitalist. Thank God they did not get what they are wanted otherwise there was going to be nothing for blacks apart from being told u still have a job where u get paid R2500 for the next 5 years with no increase

  7. CR17 will regret ever becoming the president coz he is going to be a president without power. He has been neutralized. He used money from the capitalists but could not win convincingly. Congrats their tactics worked of disqualifying Nkosazana’s delegates. There is no way he was going to win without the courts having to suspend those delegates. The main stream media will never report this fact.

  8. The bedroom coup was foiled. South Africa needs jobs and food on the table not vacuous black empowerment rhetoric meant to enrich the Gupta clan. Zuma has lost big time. Potential arrest for corruption 783!, South Africa belongs to all not Zulu clique!

  9. Who voted for Oppah Muchinguri to be Zanu PF chairperson – Mnangagwa

Who voted for Mnangagwa to President – military coup plotters

Who voted for Ramaphosa to ANC leader – ANC members.

Is it an wonder Zimbabwe and SA have taken two different routes since each country’s independence!

  10. CONGRATULATIONS CR! YOU DESERVED IT. YOU WERE OVERLOOKED IN 1994 FOR THEDEPUTY PRESIDENCY IN FAVOUR THE X…!
