Morocco and Zimbabwe left frustrated as Tunisia soar

There were four 2021 Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) qualifiers across the continent on Friday evening with most of the 48 nations having now played one game each.

It was a frustrating opening round for both Morocco and Zimbabwe as they were held to 0-0 draws at home to Mauritania and Botswana respectively.

The Atlas Lions dominated the group E clash in Rabat, but were guilty of missing several gilt-edged chances as their recent struggles continue. In all, a disappointing competitive start for new head coach Vahid Halilhodžic as the North African’s now switch their focus to Burundi.

Zimbabwe also failed in their quest to find the back of the net against their southern African rivals. Boasting a team with several South African-based stars – including Kaizer Chiefs forward Khama Billiat – the Warriors were strong favourites, especially on home soil.

But it would turn out to be a frustrating day at the office and with Algeria and Zambia completing a very competitive group H, it could prove to be a very costly result.

Elsewhere, Saif-Eddine Khaoui and Wahbi Khazri scored a brace apiece as Tunisia kicked-off their campaign with a 4-1 win over Libya. The perfect start for the Eagles of Carthage who managed a fourth-placed finish in Egypt earlier this year.

Group J rivals Tanzania also got their campaign off to a winning start, coming from behind to beat Equatorial Guinea in Dar es Salaam.
