Controversial images of prison inmates enjoying a braai have gone viral via social media, In the photos, the prisoners can be seen congregating around the fire while barbecuing the meat themselves.

The news sparked a huge reaction as many South Africans expressed outrage, while others felt that inmates are entitled to certain privileges

Setting the record straight about what was happening in the pictures, the Department of Correctional Services spokesperson, Mr Singabakho Nxumalo reponded:

“A regular meal determined according to the DCS current meal plan, which comprises seven cycles of twelve days each. The cycle meal plan is based on various types of food, as well as portion sizes indicated on the current Departmental ration scales.

A meal for a typical day as per cycle meal plan contains the following:

Breakfast:

Cereal with milk and sugar

Bread with margarine and a spread

Tea or coffee with sugar and milk

Light meal:

Bread with margarine and a spread

Vitamin enriched fruit drink or fresh fruit or soup

Main meal:

Protein rich dish (animal protein)

Starch dish

Vegetable dishes (two types)

Tea or coffee with sugar and milk

As stipulated in the Departmental Procedure, there are neither special meals nor deviations allowed on the current Departmental ration scales. However, the food service may acquire permission to order raw rations on approval of the Head of Correctional Centre to cater for special occasions such as Christmas.”
