By A Correspondent| Constitutional law expert and Motlanthe commissioner, Lovemore Madhuku has slammed moves by ZANU PF to change the constitution so to give its party leader Emmerson Mnangagwa more powers than his predecessor Robert Mugabe possessed.
Cabinet on the 17th December pushed through a bill that will remove the running mates clause for Vice Presidents, and furthermore centralise powers to the president to cherry pick judges, the Prosecutor General as well as to appoint a parallel Human Rights authority running in the name of Public Protector.
Speaking in response, Madhuku said:
“The proposed amendments to the Constitution on running mates, the judiciary and the PG must be opposed on the following sacrosanct basis: a government of the day must not be allowed to tailor the Constitution to suit its purely partisan interests.
“The Constitution cannot be amended merely because ZANU PF says so. Both within and outside Polad, I will stand for the position that defines me vis-a-vis a Constitution: a constitution must not be the word of the ruling politicians.”
