Tsvangirai Calls for Special Conference, A Total Waste of Time, Money

Morgan Tsvangirai says MDC-T will host a National Convergence Conference in two to three months’ to discuss the country’s worsening economic situation.
“This is not an MDC platform; everyone is invited including Zanu PF. This is a very serious challenge as the country is in a serious crisis written and authored by Zanu PF,” Tsvangirai said. “The people who should welcome this conference the most are Zanu PF because we will provide a solution to the crisis they have created themselves.”

What Tsvangirai has completely failed to appreciate is that Zimbabwe’s economic problems have their roots in the country’s tyrannical political system hence the reason why throughout the GNU when he had the chance to dismantle the dictatorship by implementing the agreed democratic reforms he failed to get even one reform implemented in five years.

Now he is wittering about economic conference; this is a waste of time and money because this will only seek to address the economic problem and not the political problem causing it. What the country needs is a political solution to a political problem.

The three main problems fuelling the economic meltdown are mismanagement, corruption and lack of donor and investor confidence in the country because of its unworkable indigenisation policies. Zanu PF has stubbornly refused to address these problems because they are closely tired with the political patronage system the regime has instituted and relies on now more than ever to stay in power. The only way forward is for the regime to step aside to allow for the implementation of ALL the democratic reforms and then the holding of free, fair and credible elections.

Tsvangirai and all his fellow MDC leaders like Tendai Biti, Welshman Ncube, etc. have been careful not to call for the implementation of the democratic reforms for fear it will be calling attention on them as people ask why the reforms were not implemented during the GNU.

Ever since the rigged 2013 election which saw many MDC politicians lost their public positions, they have been fighting hard to get back on the gravy train. Tsvangirai and others hope the conference will lead to a GNU mark-2 in which they will have a role and, most important of all, leg in the gravy train.

If there is going to be a conference then it must be to set up the body to implement the democratic reforms of which Zanu PF and MDC will have no role to play given that they are the ones who failed to implement the reforms during the GNU.

“The signs of national leadership failure are now even more glaring for everyone to see, with government now literally lurching from one crisis to the other… Asi azvibatsiri kungochema (it doesn’t help to moan all the time). We all have to find a way out of this situation,” he said.
One of the greatest leadership failures in Zimbabwe history was MDC’s failure to implement even one democratic reform in their five years in the GNU. If MDC had implemented the reforms then Mugabe would not have rigged the 2013 elections and the country would not be in this mess.
After 35 years of independence and being denied their basic and fundamental right to free, fair and credible elections this matter must now be dealt with once and once for all. The right to a free vote is the basis of good, accountable and legitimate government, we would not be in this hell-hole if we had one.

  1. It is hard to see how Dr Tsvangirai be expected to successful carry out a task he does not understand. All he wants is to be in power and once there he can once again enjoy the fruits of being in power without ever changing people’s lives for the better.

  3. @Patrick
Yes it does, the reforms are the key and it is one of those combination locks, getting just one number is not enough to open the door – you have to get all the numbers right in right sequence on one seating! That is something idiots like Tsvangirai will never ever do.

  4. It comes back to MDC’s failure to implement the reforms doesn’t because media reforms were included.

  5. I admit that once upon a time I did believe in President Mugabe to the point of following him blindly like a sheep. I believe many of these MDC supporters were once upon a time Zanu PF supporters and, like me, believed everything President Mugabe said. We all make mistakes but it is important that we learn from our mistakes. It seems MDC supporters are refusing to learn!

  6. The best chance to implement the reforms was during the GNU but not even one reform was implemented because neither Tsvangirai and his MDC friends understood what these reforms were nor did the Zimbabwe electorate otherwise they would have never allowed MDC to get away without even one reform implemented.
You ask what my strategy of getting the reforms implemented is. I will tell you, get the ordinary people to understand what these reforms are and why we need them and they will force Mugabe to have them implemented. This Zanu PF dictatorship build on the people’s ignorance and her twin sister fear enlighten the people and the regime will collapse in a day!
No one has taken up the task of enlightening people because it is a tough job but that does not mean it cannot be done!

  7. At the last elections Zimbabwe had no fewer than 28 political parties and yet the country is still in this mess. We are have 280 come the next elections, I can tell you now the country will still be in this mess. It is not the quantity that matters but the quality.
As long as we have voters who think someone as corrupt and incompetent as Tsvangirai is fit to be president; you can have the Albert Einstein of a politician he or she will lose to the village idiot from Buhera! In other words we also need a pool of quality voters and we clearly do not have them.
So you see my friend the solution to Zimbabwe’s nightmare is a lot more complex than you think.
I am secretary general of the Zimbabwe Social Democrats a small group of highly motivated and focused who are determined to see the reforms implemented. Our other task is to get Zimbabweans to think for themselves and stop following leaders like sheep. I believe we are doing a great job on both fronts.
To get the reforms implemented one does not need a full fledge political party that can come latter. If you want to know more about ZSD write to [email protected] and we will send you more details.

  9. First things first, do you agree that MDC should and could have implemented the reforms during the GNU? And do you also agreed that they failed to get even one reform implemented because they are corrupt and breathtakingly incompetent?
If you were able to answer the above then you will necessarily appreciate that Zanu PF does have the upper hand now especially is MDC has ever allowed to have a say in deciding the way forward – they are just too corrupt and incompetent to be trusted to do anything.
Zanu PF is reeling under the pressure of the economic meltdown and it is a matter of time before the dictatorship is forced to accept that it does not have the answers. The trick then will be to insist on getting the reforms implemented. Forget Tsvangirai’s stupid suggestion of discussing the economy get the reform implemented.
The government elected after free and fair elections will start addressing the economic problems.

  11. Wilbert’s proposal about ending our problems doesnt fly at all. Who is going to implement these reforms….Zanu pf? ,my foot. How are you going to get Zanu to implement the reforms. Where is your lobbying, where is your petition to the Zanu gvt, where is your action. Tell us how feasible your proposal is and we can believe you. All you seem to be doing is covering space and confusing people nothing more.

  12. Shamwari, ingobvuma hako kuti Tsvangison idofo!!…do you remember him labelling all the SADC leaders as “a bunch of cowards”?! How did he really expect the same “cowards” to then assist his cause?! If you still remember, Chematama thought his best pals were USA & UK until the much maligned Mbeki gave him a lesson in African wisdom…”much as you might not respect SADC, remember these are still your neighbours; you’ll never wake up one day to discover that your new neighbours are now America & Britain”

  14. This piece is based on MISINFORMATION and IGNORANCE!! Here is the reality check:…
[1] Elections, in Zim just like any other country, are a serious duel, certainly not for the faint-hearted! Elections are no different from a Bosso-DeMbare match! So where does the writer get this childish & naïve notion that an elected party will tamely agree to step aside? Didn’t Bush & Al Gore -yes in the so-called land of freedom & democracy- fight all the way to the Supreme Court to settle the election issue??!!
[2] By refusing to see reality and instead, choosing to bury his head in the sand, ostrich style, the writer has fallen into that lazy trap of assuming that if MDC does not win an election, then the election was rigged!! I’m astounded that he accepts, hook, line & sinker, the childish & science fiction claims by MDC e.g. migrating “X”s on ballot papers!!
[3] Is it not logical & common-sensical that there is a LIMIT to how much rigging can be done, no matter how sophisticated the rigging mechanism?! If 80-90% of the electoral were to vote MDC how could that result be conceivably be overturned into a loss for the opposition? Remember in 2008 when MDC won the 1st round of the presidential poll??!! Also remember that opposition polling agents will be present in every polling station to guard against any mischief…why is it they are happy about all the goings-on at the polling stations but only cry foul when the results are announced??!! If there was real evidence of rigging how come MDC pulled out of a court challenge on this??!!
The long & short is that Tsvangison & his party simply finished; they will be soon swept into the dustbin of political obscurity!!

  16. If you feel thats the killer punch then form your own party and push for the reforms yourself. You seem clever but how come you are full of words, by the way you speak you could have ruled Zimbabwe a long time ago. KUhukura kusina mabasa uku.

  18. How can these reforms be implemented now. Wilbert you are a day dreamer seeking unnecessary attention. Zanu pf is in control of the corridors of power and they can never agree to any reforms, so give us a formula to implement them now.

  20. Both Zanu PF and MDC have conspired to keep the ordinary people ignorant and this has not help transform the voter from the sheepish mentality of following what the leaders tell them to the free think vote demanded for a health and functional democracy.
We need to end the Zanu PF control of the media and have a truly free and media and freedom of expression. You will be pleasantly surprise how quickly society will be transformed then!

  22. I have to agree with you that why MDC supporters refuse to accept that Tsvangirai did not even attempt to implement any of the reforms when the historic record says it all. The day he got the keys to the Highlands mansion Tsvangirai forgot about the reforms.
These MDC supporters are not doing the nation any favors by giving failed leaders their an questioning and blind support, we had the same in Zanu PF and look were it has landed us.
“The fool and his money are soon parted!” The tragedy here is that it is not just these MDC supporters who have paid dearly for MDC’s betrayal, the whole nation has paid. What can we do; they have the vote?

  24. Zimbabwe needs the democratic reforms implemented and until they are implemented the country is going nowhere. You have had your idee fixe party, MDC, for 15 years now what did it accomplish other than Tsvangirai selling the nation’s chance to end the Zanu PF dictatorship for the $4 million Highlands mansion.
You inability to see Tsvangirai for the incompetent village idiot he is, even now with the benefit of hindsight, is truly astonishing! Who would believe anyone can be so shallow, thick and slow!

  30. If you are one of the 90% unemployed then you would be working day and night to find answers to this problem. You are bored because you are not affected. Do you know some one who if unemployed, ask them if they are bored to hear that there are some people seeking to end their nightmare. Comeback and tell me what they say.

  32. The economic meltdown is serious and Zanu PF cannot ignore it for much longer. Yes I believe Zanu PF will soon be seeking some way out. What we must not allow is another political fudge which is what will happen if Tsvangirai’s proposal is followed. Zanu PF will want to keep a firm hold on all the levers of power and so a solution that does not include any political reforms will suit them to the T.
Parliament is a feeble and useless body, it is Joint Operations Commandant that has real political power.

  34. It is not in the DNA of tyrannical regime to acknowledge failure and give up power and therefore we cannot allow Zanu PF to “face the music and implode” because the regime will drag the whole nation with it if we allow it to. We must demand that Zanu PF step aside now, it has dragged the nation too deep into this hell already!

  36. Some comments here reflect shallow and unproductive political levels which is really unfortunate. Does anyone honestly believe that Zanupf can attend a Tswangirai organized conference on Zimbabwe’s economy? Why not go through Parliament, may be? I believe that Tswangirai and his executives should be going out of their way to try and build up a united front with other reasonable opposition parties to effectively confront Zanupf. This money seeking political rhetoric does not demonstrate any serious thinking at all. It is just one of the many “let me just say something in order to be heard saying something”. The conference by Tswangirai is just a hallucination. Insulting Wilbert Mukori in defence of an obvious political gimmick is really unfortunate for Zimbabwe.

  38. This Wilbert guy has been singing this song for over a year now and its boring. Where is his political party and supporters so he can give us alternative ideas. I like Itai Dzamara…he graduated from talking to action. I agree he must be a C10 because he is everywhere with this song. Zimbabweans are not blind to what the MDC could have implemented during the GNU. I think you need to compose another song…this was never a hitmaker but you keep singing it.

  46. They should just let zanu-pf face the music and implode. Last time GNU gave zanu-pf a chance at re-grouping and re-oiling well their oppression machine hence the rigged 2013 elections. Tsvangson et al were sleeping on the job. If they failed to change anything from within what makes them think zanu-pf will listen this time around when they are out of government.
