Zimbabweans who cross into neighbouring Bostwana for economic or political reasons but have no papers risk being severely canned when caught, as shocking details emerge of wounded Zimbabwe torture survivors.
Early July nine Zimbabwean men reportedly sustained severe injuries after they were whipped on the buttocks with switches by a chief’s security forces in Botswana, according to a report. It is further reported  that one of the victims of the assault, Ezekiel Mukuya spent three days unable to sit because of the severity of the injuries.
The Senate Committee on Peace and Security has petitioned the Botswana government over this gross ill treatment of Zimbabweans, with Zanu PF MP for Rushinga, Damian Mumvuri reporting to Parliament the gross abuses his committee had witnessed at the border post.
Mumvuri told Parliament; “The committee managed to witness a group of Zimbabweans at the no man’s land, between Zimbabwe and Botswana who had been deported. They could hardly walk and had wounds all over their bodies.
“They submitted that they had been beaten up by both the Botswana police and the traditional chief courts,” Mumvuri said.
Botswana police have confirmed the canning incidents, explaining that the country’s chiefs were responsible for giving corporal punishment of six cuts.
Volumes of Zimbabweans cross into Botswana and other neighbouring countries in search for work, as Zimbabwe’s economy continues to deteriorate.
Botswana’s law enforcement agencies conduct patrols along the border with Zimbabwe, as well as urban sweeps, to find illegal migrants.
However, the deportees quickly find their way back through illegal entry points.

  1. Boss he is thinking out of the can. Its amazing this writer should have used a spellchecker, but he did not. When you google canning, this is what you get :
“(1) the act, process, or business of preserving cooked food by sealing in cans or jars.”
    (2) NORTH AMERICAN informal
    dismiss (someone) from their job.
“he was canned because of a fight over promotion”
“he was canned after being caught stealing office supplies”
I don’t think the writer meant people were being stuffed into metal cans.

  3. You know what Shona Hater, your statement is full of hatred, just leave them alone! They are free to stay wherever they choose. Hey, just so you know, this is not your land! Get a life, Shona Hater Hatred!

  4. The problem is that there is no one approaching organisations like the Southern Africa Litigation Centre which is based in South Africa to assist ordinary people because there is no Human Rights Organisation coming forward to assist and people are just being illtreated while the leaders are moving around getting VIP treatment for crying out loud someone approach the Southern African Litigation Centre on behalf of these people if there is proof remember there is no Tribunal in SADC because it was the very leaders that took it away . If someone is concerned that this is happening they should approach UNCHR or Southern African Litigation Centre instead of just always complaining

  7. The Batswana will brutalize and torture Zimbos as long as they know the Zimbos will face torture and brutality if they return to Zim. Hanzi SADC, tiri tese. SADC yemadhodhi!

  8. Not necessarily condoning brutal treatment of Zimbos in Botswana, but our politicians should not practise double standards. Our own police officers recently beat up peaceful protesters, including children, but the same politicians remained quiet. Yes, Botswana police should treat foreigners humanely, but they have a responsibility of securing their borders, protecting their economy and jobs. Our leaders should ask themselves why Zimbabweans run away from their country. That which they run away from is what needs fixing. Hapana munhu anoda kugara kunze kwemusha, unless visiting. Our politicians should not see the specks in other people’s eyes when there are logs in their own eyes. Solve gukurahundi, 2008 and Chiadzwa massacres before making noise about canings in Botswana. Charity begins at home.
