Terrence Mawawa | The Zimbabwe National Soccer team will face Bafana Bafana of South Africa in a friendly encounter in March.
The match will be played at the National Sports Stadium on March 25 and it will be used as part of the Warriors’
preparations for the African Cup of Nations qualifying
campaigns.
ZIFA vice-president Omega Sibanda told The Herald yesterday
they would also use the same match to
commemorate the 13 soccer fans who perished in a stampede
happened at the stadium in 2000.
“We will try and utilise the FIFA dates
for friendly matches and right now we are working
on the friendly tie against South Africa on
25 March,” Sibanda said.
“We last played them in 2013 and we are also
saying that match at the National Sports Stadium will
be in memory of the disaster that befell us when we
lost our fans who perished in the stampede.”
During the ill-fated match, the Warriors lost 0-2 to Bafana Bafana.
Helman ‘Midnight Express’ Makhelele, Delron Buckley and Siyabonga ‘Bele’ Nomvete were among the players who featured for Bafana Bafana.
