Watch the People’s President Nelson Chamisa as he responds to questions among others on a story that he is set to meet ZANU PF leader Emmerson Mnangagwa.

The LIVE presser begins shortly. (refresh this page to watch).

The development comes after a local paper said Mnangagwa and Chamisa are set to meet face-to-face at the memorial service of the late MDC founding president Morgan Tsvangirai.

The memorial service for the former Prime Minister will be held at Humanikwa village in Buhera on May 4.

The permanent secretary in the Ministry of Information, Nick Mangwana was noncommittal when asked by the Daily News about Mnangagwa’s availability for the service citing security reasons. He said: “We cannot disclose the itinerary of the president this early for security reasons. We are going to give a position when the time comes. “

The Tsvangirai family spokesman, Manase Tsvangirai, said: “This memorial is open to everyone be it political parties, churches, individuals or other organisations, everybody is being invited, the reason is that Morgan made friends with everyone during the Government of National Unity, so we cannot be found singling out some people that they must not attend.

“Even Zanu PF is invited. We have sent invitations through the right protocol channels. We also invited … Mnangagwa, we sent through the invitation and an accompanying letter.

“Morgan was a former Prime Minister of Zimbabwe and not of a party and because of that there is no way we can have selected people to attend. Morgan worked for Zimbabwe and we are saying everyone, … is invited. This is going to be a very big function.”

While addressing party supporters at a campaign rally in the dormitory town of Chitungwiza ahead of the July 30 elections last year, Chamisa claimed that ZANU PF had a hand in the death of Tsvangirai. He said: “Now, I want to say it publicly: I have never told you that there are people who connived to kill Tsvangirai in the vain hope that they would have killed the struggle as well, not knowing that they were rekindling a brighter flame that will consume dictatorship in Zimbabwe,” he said.

Why did you kill him only to shed crocodile tears…? I was trained by Tsvangirai and he showed me the way hence it was not difficult for me to see their hand when Zanu PF attempted to dictate the leadership question in our party.

Chamisa and Mnangagwa have not met face to face since the disputed July 30 harmonised elections held in 2018.
