The Deputy Speaker of the Egyptian Parliament Soliman Wahdan has requested to not settle for the Egyptian Football Association’s (EFA) resignation but to investigate them over corruption and favouritism accusations.
Egypt were knocked out of the 2019 AFCON following an astounding 1-0 defeat against South Africa. The Pharaohs’ exit from the tournament represents their worst AFCON result when the competition is hosted by Egypt.
South Africa will now face Nigeria in the quarter finals after the Super Eagles edged Cameroon in a 3-2 win on Sunday.
“I warned before from sports corruption and especially in EFA after the underwhelming results and scandal that happened in the 2018 World Cup and I requested in the Parliament their resignation, the thing which didn’t happen,” Wahdan said.
“Not holding the EFA accountable for their deeds back in that time is what made us achieve these results in AFCON 2019. Now failure and corruption is repeated from the association’s members. They have to be accounted for the failure and the state of sadness they caused the Egyptian people.”
“They failed in everything whether in choosing the coach who was the highest earner in the tournament and in favouring certain players as well as Amr Warda’s incident which saw him excluded from the squad before he was brought back in.”
