The abducted activist Itai Dzamara’s lawyer, Adv Kennedy Masiye has spoken against the practice of politicians using bail as a weapon to punish perceived enemies.

Writing at the weekend, Adv Masiye said:

“For the legal system to regain its respect officers of the courts should do their jobs in a manner that advances justice and confidence in the system.

“Whether one is from MDC or Zanu pf the court should always be blind to these prejudices.

“Procedures like Bail should not be used to seek approval from politicians but should be a transparent process guided by the rules and principles of democracy and the rule of law.

“Following the dictates of politics will always corrupt the criminal justice system and render otherwise good court rulings or judgements useless and strategic ammunition for political agendas.”
