HUGE BLOW FOR MNANGAGWA AS SUPREME COURT ….

Malawi’s Supreme Court yesterday annulled last year’s disputed presidential election results (which ZANU PF leader Emmerson Mnangagwa had endorsed as free and fair) citing “widespread” irregularities and ordered a new vote.

The election last May returned the sitting president to power, leading to deadly confrontations and widespread unrest.

The development is a loss to not only him, but his regional backers.

Furthermore the verdict serves as a judicial precedent that can be used in neighbouring Zimbabwe. Legal experts said that with the recent revelations submitted in writing before Zimbabwe’s Parliament by the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission concerning the 2018 polls, the Malawi development could combined strengthen chances of a new ConCourt appeal by MDC President Nelson Chamisa. Constitutional Court expert Dr Lovemore Madhuku told ZimEye, Chamisa can certainly appeal based on new evidence (click here to listen).

Speaking during his nation address in Mbare last week, Chamisa announced how there is now new evidence officially submitted by ZEC that shows the 2018 polls were illegally conducted. In an appeal, the Malawi case can now be cited. Mnangagwa had endosed Malawi’s polls as free and fair

Peter Mutharika (who had earlier been announced winner) has been an Emmerson Mnangagwa backer and when Zimbabwe’s own elections were held amid complaints over vote rigging in 2018, he celebrated Mnangagwa. He said “Through the elections, Zimbabweans have demonstrated their will to entrench democracy and good governance in Zimbabwe and in the region,”

Zimbabwe’s electoral commission declared Mnangagwa the winner with 50.8 percent of the vote — avoiding a run-off by the narrowest of margins.

MDC leader, Nelson Chamisa was announced as having 44.3 percent of the vote.

Mutharika said in giving governance mandate to Mnangagwa, “the people of Zimbabwe have shown that they have confidence in the maturity and experience of His Excellency President [Emmerson] Mnangagwa to lead them towards achieveing greater economic prosperity for all Zimbabweans.”
